I was a surrogate agent.
I matched pregnant women with couples who were having trouble conceiving.
It was my job to make sure both parties were happy and content with each other.
Sometimes, I had trouble finding the right fit for certain couples.
Other times, it was easy.
But one thing was for sure: I loved my job.
My sister Jessey was currently raising our niece Juno’s savings.
Juno was six years old and the daughter of my late best friend who died in childbirth.
I had agreed to be her surrogate mother, but something went wrong, and I had to pull out of being her surrogate.
Instead, I raised her as my own niece.
I had to work hard to support Jessey in raising Juno, but I didn’t mind.
I loved being an uncle to my six-year-old niece.
"Juno, don’t forget your lunch, okay?" Jessey called from the kitchen while packing Juno’s lunch in her backpack.
"Got it!"
Juno called back while running down the hallway to the front door.
"I’m going to be late for school!"
"Oh dear! Then you better hurry up!" Jessey called back while rushing down the hallway to give Juno a quick goodbye hug and kiss.
"Bye, sis! Have a good day at work!"
"Thanks, sis! You too!"
I waved at Juno as she rushed out the door before quickly waving at least a week goodbye to Jessey.
"Have a good day at work, Kate! Don’t forget to pick up some milk on your way home from work!"
"I won’t! Thanks for reminding me!"
I walked into my office and took a seat behind my desk.
My assistant came in and dropped off the morning mail for me to look over.
Most of the letters were from clients that I was working with.
There were also a few from surrogates looking for jobs.
But then there was one letter that caught my attention.
It was in a black envelope with a crimson wax seal.
I had never seen this crest before, and it piqued my curiosity.
I opened the envelope and pulled out the letter, which was written on expensive parchment paper.
The handwriting was elegant, but not feminine.
I read over the letter carefully, taking in every word.
The man who wrote it was named Sir Ian, and he lived in a castle up north.
He wanted a child but could not find a woman to bear his child, so he hired me to be his surrogate agent. That was nothing new.
What caught me off guard was what he asked for next.
He wanted me to personally carry his child instead of finding another woman to do so.
I had never had a request like that before, but it wasn’t uncommon for surrogacy agencies to have this happen every now and then.
The letter continued, and I read over his offer for my services.
I could not believe the number I saw on the page in front of me.
It was enough money to secure Juno’s future forever!
He also mentioned that he would like to meet with me tonight at his castle to discuss the terms of our agreement further.
I gripped the letter tightly in my hand, knowing that this could be the decision that changes everything for Juno’s life forever. I sat down at my desk and pulled out a piece of paper and a quill pen to write back to him.
