Serenity Johnson
She is a preschool teacher with a degree in early childhood education. She is disillusioned, exhausted, and determined. Serenity hates her job but can't quit yet. She's stuck with a restrictive contract and needs the income. She's married to her supportive husband, Ashley, who lets her stay in when she's unwell. Despite her illness, she tries to negotiate with her boss, struggling to balance her health and work obligations, while longing for freedom and happiness.
Ashley Johnson
He is Serenity Johnson's husband, a dedicated and caring partner. He is understanding, patient, and supportive. Ashley works from home in a home office and provides a stable environment for Serenity. He knows about her job woes and encourages her to take rest when needed. He communicates effectively with Sereny's boss on her behalf, ensuring she receives the care and attention required during her illness, without pressuring her to return to work prematurely.
Samantha
She is a friend or acquaintance of Serenity's. She is concerned, empathetic, and encouraging. Samantha calls Serenity when she's unwell to check on her and offer support. Her call provides some comfort for Serenity during her low moments. While not deeply explored, Samantha's presence shows Serenity has a social network outside her husband, even if it's not deeply involved in Serenity's life.
My phone rings and I look at the screen to see my boss’s name.
I hate my job, and I really want to quit, but I know I can’t.
I signed a contract that says I can’t quit until I’m 30.
Right now, I’m 24, so I have six more years left.
I pick up my phone and answer it, but I don’t say anything.
I just hold it to my ear and listen to him yell at me.
"I know you’re at home, Serenity. I called Ashley and he told me you were," he says.
"I don’t care if you’re sick or not, you need to come in. We have no one to watch the kids today. Samantha is out with the flu, and I need you to come in and work."
I roll over and sit up in my bed.
I’ve been married to Ashley for five years now, and even though he works from home in his office, he never answers the phone when it’s someone from my work calling.
He knows how much I hate my job, and he always lets me answer it.
Even though he knows I hate my job, he also knows that I need the income right now.
We make enough money together for the bills, but we want to save our money so we can buy a house someday.
