Lily Matthews
Chris's sister and Megan's confidante, supportive of Megan, curly blonde hair, brown eyes, empathetic and wise.
Chris Matthews
unfaithful partner, in a relationship with Megan, short black hair, blue eyes, charismatic yet deceptive.
Megan Thompson
betrayed partner, in a relationship with Chris, long brown hair, green eyes, resilient and conflicted.
I was never the type of girl who went through her boyfriend’s phone or computer.
I trusted Chris, and I had no reason not to.
He was a great guy, and he loved me.
At least, I thought he did.
But when I got an email from his sister with a picture attached, I couldn’t help but click on it.
It was a picture of us at our engagement party last month.
I smiled at the memory, but then my eyes drifted to the other people in the background.
And that’s when I saw her.
She was beautiful with long blonde hair and a killer body.
She was also all over Chris, her hands on his chest, her lips inches from his.
My heart stopped as I realized what I was looking at.
This wasn’t just some random girl.
This was someone Chris knew, someone he was clearly comfortable with.
My hands trembled as I stared at the screen, my mind racing with anger and betrayal.
I heard the familiar rumble of Chris's car pulling into the driveway.
Panic set in.
I quickly closed the laptop and stood up, my heart pounding in my chest.
The front door creaked open, and Chris walked in, a smile on his face.
"Hey babe," he said, dropping his keys on the table. "How was your day?"
I swallowed hard, trying to keep my voice steady. "Fine."
He walked over to me and wrapped his arms around my waist. "You okay? You seem a little off."
I pushed him away, unable to bear his touch. "I'm fine."
Chris frowned, confusion flickering in his eyes. "What's wrong?"
I took a deep breath, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to spill over. "Who is she?"
His brow furrowed. "Who?"
"The blonde girl," I said, my voice shaking. "At our engagement party."
Chris's face went pale. "What are you talking about?"
"I saw the picture," I said, my voice rising. "She was all over you!"
Chris's charm quickly turned into defensiveness. "Megan, it's not what you think."
"Then what is it?" I demanded, my frustration boiling over. "Because it sure looks like you're cheating on me!"
"I'm not cheating on you," Chris said, his voice hardening. "She's just a friend."
"A friend?" I scoffed. "Do you always let your friends get that close to you?"
"Megan, you're blowing this out of proportion," he said, running a hand through his hair.
"No, I'm not!" I shouted. "I trusted you, Chris! How could you do this to me?"
Chris took a step back, his eyes narrowing. "You're being ridiculous."
"Ridiculous?" I repeated, my voice trembling with hurt and anger. "You betrayed me!"
"Megan," he said, his tone softening. "Please, let's just talk about this."
"Talk about what?" I snapped. "How you've been lying to me? How you've been sneaking around behind my back?"
Chris shook his head. "It's not like that."
"Then what is it like?" I demanded.
He opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by the sound of his phone buzzing in his pocket.
He pulled it out and glanced at the screen.
His expression darkened.
"Who is it?" I asked.
"It's none of your business," he said, shoving the phone back into his pocket.
"It is my business!" I shouted. "I'm your fiancée!"
Chris's jaw clenched. "Not everything revolves around you, Megan."
My heart shattered at his words.
Tears streamed down my face as I looked at him, the man I thought I knew.
"I can't do this," I whispered.
"Megan—"
"No," I said firmly. "I need some time to think."
Before he could respond, I turned and walked out of the room.
I needed air.
I needed space.
But most of all, I needed to figure out how to mend my broken heart.
As I reached for the front door handle, it suddenly flew open.
Standing there was the blonde girl from the picture.
Her eyes locked onto mine with a cold intensity that sent chills down my spine.
"You must be Megan," she said with a smirk.
My blood ran cold as she stepped inside.
Chris stood frozen behind me.
The tension in the room was palpable.
"What are you doing here?" Chris demanded.
The blonde girl ignored him and kept her gaze fixed on me.
"We need to talk," she said.
The blonde woman stepped closer, her smirk fading into a serious expression.
"I'm not here to fight," she said, her voice steady. "I need to tell you something about Chris."
My eyes narrowed, suspicion and anger swirling within me.
Chris remained silent, his face pale.
"What could you possibly have to say?" I demanded.
She took a deep breath, her eyes flickering with something that almost looked like regret.
"Chris and I... we had an affair," she confessed, her tone almost apologetic.
My emotions shifted from rage to a cold determination.
I turned to Chris, my voice trembling with controlled fury. "Is this true?"
Chris stammered, unable to meet my gaze. "Megan, I—"
"Is it true?" I repeated, my voice rising.
He nodded slowly, his shoulders slumping in defeat. "Yes."
A surge of clarity washed over me; I knew what I had to do next.
I stepped back, putting distance between us.
"How long?" I asked, my voice icy.
"Six months," the blonde woman answered for him.
I felt a wave of nausea but forced myself to stay composed.
"Why?" I asked Chris directly.
He looked at the floor, shame evident in his posture. "I don't know," he muttered. "It just happened."
"It just happened?" I echoed incredulously. "That's your excuse?"
"Megan, I'm sorry," he pleaded. "I never wanted to hurt you."
"But you did," I said firmly. "You betrayed me."
The room was silent except for the sound of our breathing.
I glanced at the blonde woman. "And you? Why are you here now?"
"I thought you deserved to know the truth," she said quietly. "I'm ending things with Chris."
I laughed bitterly. "How noble of you."
She flinched but didn't respond.
I turned back to Chris. "We're done."
"Megan, please," he begged. "We can work through this."
"No," I said firmly. "We can't."
I walked past him and headed for the door.
As I reached for the handle, Chris grabbed my arm.
"Megan, wait," he said desperately.
I yanked my arm free and glared at him. "Don't touch me."
He stepped back, defeated.
Without another word, I opened the door and walked out into the cool night air.
The stars twinkled above me as if mocking my pain.
I took a deep breath and started walking down the street, not knowing where I was going but certain that anywhere was better than here.
My phone buzzed in my pocket.
I pulled it out and saw a text from my best friend, Lisa.
"Are you okay?" it read.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I typed back a quick response. "No."
Within seconds, my phone rang.
"Hey," Lisa's concerned voice came through the line. "What happened?"
"It's over," I said simply.
"Where are you?" she asked urgently.
"I'm walking down Elm Street," I replied.
"I'll be there in five minutes," she said before hanging up.
True to her word, Lisa's car pulled up beside me a few minutes later.
She jumped out and wrapped me in a tight hug.
"I'm so sorry," she whispered.
I clung to her, finally allowing myself to cry.
After a few moments, she gently guided me into the passenger seat of her car.
"Let's get you out of here," she said softly as she started the engine.
As we drove away from the house that held so many memories now tainted by betrayal, I felt a strange sense of relief mixed with sorrow.
Chris stood there, his face a mask of regret, illuminated by the harsh light.
I took a deep breath and stepped out of the car, my eyes cold and resolute.
"Megan," Chris called out, his voice tinged with desperation as he approached me.
"Please, can we talk? Just give me another chance."
I raised a hand to cut him off sharply.
"It's over, Chris," I said firmly. "I'm taking our child with me."
His expression shifted from regret to anger in an instant.
"You can't just take our child away from me!" he shouted, his fists clenching at his sides.
Lisa stepped out of the car and moved to stand protectively beside me.
"Back off, Chris," she warned, her voice steady and unwavering.
Chris glared at her before turning his attention back to me.
"You think you can just walk away?" he spat. "You think you can take everything from me?"
I felt a surge of strength as I looked him in the eye.
"Watch me," I replied coldly.
Ignoring his shouts, I turned my back on him and walked towards the house to gather my things.
The front door creaked open as I stepped inside, the familiar scent of home now tainted by betrayal.
I moved quickly through the living room, grabbing a suitcase from the closet and heading for the bedroom.
The sound of Chris's futile shouting echoed through the house as I began packing my clothes.
Lisa followed me inside, her presence a comforting reminder that I wasn't alone in this.
"Do you need help?" she asked softly.
I shook my head, my hands moving with purpose as I filled the suitcase.
"No, I've got it," I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside me.
As I zipped up the suitcase, I glanced around the room one last time.
Memories of happier times flashed through my mind, but I pushed them aside.
There was no going back now.
With Lisa by my side, I walked back towards the front door.
Chris was still outside, his face twisted with anger and frustration.
"Megan!" he yelled as we stepped onto the porch. "Don't do this!"
I ignored him and kept walking towards Lisa's car.
My heart pounded in my chest, but I knew this was the right decision.
Lisa opened the trunk and helped me load my suitcase inside.
As we closed it and turned to get into the car, Chris grabbed my arm again.
"Megan, please," he pleaded, his voice breaking.
I yanked my arm free and glared at him one last time.
"Goodbye, Chris," I said firmly before getting into the car.
Lisa started the engine and backed out of the driveway as Chris continued to shout behind us.
His voice grew fainter as we drove away, leaving him standing alone in the darkness.
The road stretched out ahead of us, illuminated by the car's headlights.
I took a deep breath and leaned back in my seat, feeling a strange sense of liberation despite the pain.
"Where are we going?" Lisa asked gently.
"Anywhere but here," I replied quietly.
She nodded and focused on the road ahead as we left behind everything that once was familiar.
