I’m a dead man.
I’ve known it for a long time, but now it’s official.
Sarah Jennings is going to kill me.
She’s been hunting me for years, and she’s finally found me.
I can’t outrun her, and I can’t outfight her.
There’s only one thing left to do.
I have to outsmart her.
I’m good at that.
It’s how I’ve managed to survive this long.
The desert is my ally, and I know it better than anyone else alive.
I can disappear into the dunes like a ghost, leaving no trace behind.
But Sarah has found me anyway, which means she’s either very good or very lucky.
Probably both.
Seed of Survival
I sprint through the scorching desert, my heart pounding like a war drum.
The sun blazes overhead, turning the sand into a searing inferno beneath my feet.
I glance back and see Sarah Jennings closing in, her determined eyes locked on me.
She’s relentless, a predator who won’t stop until she has her prey.
My mind races; I need a plan.
I spot a narrow canyon ahead and veer towards it, hoping to lose her in the maze of rocks.
The entrance looms closer, a dark slash in the golden landscape.
I dive into the shadows, the coolness of the canyon walls a brief respite from the heat.
“Ethan!” Sarah’s voice echoes behind me, taunting and confident. “You can’t hide forever!”
My breath is ragged, my body aching, but I push on.
The canyon twists and turns, each corner offering a fleeting hope of escape.
Suddenly, Marcus Flynn appears from behind a boulder, his face grim but determined.
He signals for me to follow him into a hidden crevice in the rock wall.
Without hesitation, I slip into the narrow space, feeling the rough stone scrape against my skin.
We exchange a brief nod; survival is our only focus now.

Marcus leads me deeper into the crevice, where the light barely penetrates.
“Did she see you?” he whispers urgently.
“I don’t think so,” I reply, trying to catch my breath. “But she’s close.”
Marcus curses under his breath. “We need to move fast. She’ll figure out where we went soon enough.”
We squeeze through the tight passageway, our movements careful and deliberate.
The air is cooler here, but it carries the weight of impending danger.
“Why is she after you?” Marcus asks as we navigate through the labyrinthine path.
“It’s a long story,” I say. “Let’s just say she has a personal vendetta.”
Marcus nods. “Well, whatever it is, we need to stay ahead of her.”
We emerge into a small cavern, dimly lit by cracks in the ceiling above.
It’s a temporary refuge at best, but it will have to do for now.
“We can rest here for a moment,” Marcus says. “But not too long.”
I lean against the wall, my muscles screaming for relief. “Thanks for helping me back there.”
Marcus shrugs. “We’re in this together. Besides, I owe you one.”
Before I can respond, a distant sound reaches our ears—a faint echo of footsteps approaching.
Seed of Survival
“She’s coming,” Marcus says tersely. “We need to go.”
We scramble to our feet and head towards another exit at the far end of the cavern.
The narrow passage opens up into yet another series of winding tunnels.
Every step feels like walking on thin ice; one wrong move could be our last.
As we press on, I can’t shake the feeling that Sarah is always one step behind us.
Her presence is like a shadow that refuses to be shaken off.
“Keep moving,” Marcus urges. “We’re almost there.”
“Almost where?” I ask between breaths.
“There’s an old mining shaft up ahead,” he explains. “It might give us an edge.”
We round another corner and see the entrance to the shaft—a gaping hole reinforced with rusted metal beams.
Marcus pulls out a flashlight and shines it into the darkness beyond.
“This way,” he says, stepping forward cautiously.
I follow him into the abyss, my senses heightened by adrenaline and fear.
The ground beneath us shifts slightly as we descend deeper into the mine.
Suddenly, there’s a loud crack above us—a beam giving way under pressure.
