I wake up to the sound of my phone vibrating on the nightstand.
I reach over and pick it up, squinting at the bright screen as I try to focus on the time.
It’s 7:00 a.m. on a Saturday.
Why the hell is someone calling me this early?
I’m about to ignore it and go back to sleep when I see who’s calling.
Sarah.
My heart leaps into my throat as I answer the call, and I can barely get her name out before she starts talking.
"Jason, we need to talk."
Her voice is filled with sadness and regret, and I know what’s coming next.
I’ve been dreading this moment for weeks, ever since she told me she needed some space.
But no amount of preparation could have braced me for the pain of hearing those words come out of her mouth.
"I’m so sorry, Jason," she says, her voice breaking.
"I never meant for this to happen."
Tears well up in my eyes as I try to process what she’s saying.
How did we go from planning our future together to this?
Just a few months ago, we were talking about moving in together and starting a family, and now…

...now it's all falling apart.
"Sarah, please," I manage to choke out. "Can't we talk about this? Work things out?"
There's a long pause on the other end of the line. I can almost hear her biting her lip, trying to hold back tears.
"I've thought about it a lot, Jason," she says finally. "But I just don't see a way forward for us."
Her words hit me like a punch to the gut. I sit up in bed, my head spinning.
"What happened?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper. "What changed?"
"It's not you," she says quickly. "It's me. I need to figure out who I am and what I want."
I feel a surge of frustration. "That's such a cliché, Sarah! If you didn't want this, why did we make all those plans?"
She sighs deeply. "I thought I did. But now... I'm not so sure."
The silence between us is deafening. I can hear my own heartbeat pounding in my ears.
"Is there someone else?" The question slips out before I can stop myself.
"No!" she exclaims, almost offended. "There's no one else, Jason. This is about me needing to find myself."
I don't know what to say. My mind is a whirlwind of emotions—anger, sadness, confusion.

"Please understand," she continues softly. "I never wanted to hurt you."
"But you did," I reply, my voice breaking. "You have."
She starts to cry on the other end of the line, and it tears me apart to hear her like this.
"I'm so sorry," she whispers through her sobs.
I close my eyes, trying to hold back my own tears. "Goodbye, Sarah."
Before she can respond, I end the call and drop the phone onto the bed beside me.
The room feels unbearably quiet now. The weight of what just happened presses down on me, making it hard to breathe.
I lie back down and stare at the ceiling, feeling completely numb.
How did everything go so wrong?
Just as I'm about to lose myself in the abyss of my thoughts, there's a loud knock on my apartment door.
I ignore it at first, hoping whoever it is will go away.
But the knocking persists, growing more insistent.
With a groan, I force myself out of bed and shuffle towards the door.
When I open it, I'm surprised to see my best friend, Mark, standing there with a concerned look on his face.
"Jason," he says urgently. "We need to get out of here. Now."

"What are you talking about?" I ask, bewildered.
"No time to explain," he replies quickly. "Just grab your stuff and let's go."
"Mark—"
"Trust me," he interrupts, grabbing my arm and pulling me towards the living room. "It's not safe here."
My heart races as I see the seriousness in his eyes. Something is very wrong.
Without another word, I rush back to my bedroom and throw on some clothes.
As I'm stuffing essentials into a backpack, Mark's phone rings.
He answers it with a curt "Yeah?" and listens intently for a moment before hanging up.
"We have to move faster," he says urgently when I return to the living room with my bag slung over my shoulder.
"What's going on?" I demand as we head for the door.
"I'll explain everything later," he promises as we step out into the hallway. "Right now, we just need to get somewhere safe."
We hurry down the stairs and burst out onto the street where Mark's car is parked haphazardly at the curb.
As we climb in and speed away from my apartment building, I can't shake the feeling that my life has just taken an even darker turn than losing Sarah.
