Chapter 1
I was running.
Running as fast as my legs would carry me, my heart pounding in my chest.
The sound of my own breath filled my ears, and I could feel the sweat dripping down my face.
I had to keep going.
Had to get away from them.
They were coming for me, and I didn’t know what they would do if they caught me.
I pushed myself harder, trying to put as much distance between us as possible.
But it was no use.
They were too fast, too strong.
And they knew who I was.
Knew what I was.
I stumbled over a root and fell to the ground, scraping my hands on the rough bark of the trees that surrounded me.
The thick forest rushed past me, my feet barely touching the ground as I ran for my life.
Branches and undergrowth clawed at my legs, but I barely felt them through the panic that had taken over every inch of me.
I didn’t know how long I had been running or how much farther I could go, but I couldn’t stop.
It was too dangerous to stop.
They were still after me, and they would catch up if I slowed down.
I could sense it in the air, a dark presence that seemed to follow after me despite being out of sight.
It knew who I was, what I was capable of… and it wanted me dead.
My breath came in ragged gasps as I forced myself to keep going, not daring to slow down for even a second.
The forest around me was almost pitch black, the canopy above blocking out what little light there was from the moon and stars.
I could barely see anything in front of me beyond the next few trees, but somehow that only made my other senses more acute.
The air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, and I could hear the rustling of night creatures all around me.
Everything seemed so loud in comparison to my own frantic heartbeat, but there was still something missing… something that should have been there to create more noise than just my own footsteps pounding against the hard ground.
I pushed myself even harder, trying to outrun whatever was coming for me.
But then it was too late - something hard slammed into me and sent me tumbling to the ground.
Pain shot through my hands and knees as I skidded across the rough terrain before coming to a stop a few feet away from where I had tripped over… something.
My heart slammed into my chest as sheer panic filled every inch of me - they had caught up to me!
I watched, breathless and bewildered, as the old man chanted ancient words. The ground beneath us trembled. One by one, the demons were sucked into a swirling vortex of light that had opened at his feet. Their screams echoed through the forest before being swallowed by the void.
When the last demon had vanished, the old man turned to me. His eyes were a striking shade of blue, filled with wisdom and an unspoken sadness. "You are safe now," he said gently, lowering his staff. "But you must come with me. There is much you need to learn."
I hesitated for only a moment before nodding. I had no other option; my life as I knew it was over. With one last glance at the darkened forest, I followed him into the unknown, hoping to find answers—and perhaps a new beginning—in whatever awaited us beyond the trees.
Stumbling over a root, I fell to the ground.
Pain shot through me as my hands scraped against the rough bark of the trees around me.
Ignoring it, I scrambled back to my feet and kept running through the thick forest.
I could sense it in the air around me - a dark presence that seemed to follow after me despite being out of sight.
The air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth as I forced myself to keep going, not daring to slow down for even a second.
I couldn’t give up now - not when they would catch up if I slowed down.
Crashing through the undergrowth, I tried to put some distance between us, but it was no use.
They were too close behind me; their footsteps like thunder in my ears as they continued their relentless pursuit.
My breaths came in ragged gasps as panic set in - they would catch up soon enough!
A bright light suddenly flared ahead of me.
Aiden Mercer," he said, his voice smooth and soothing, yet commanding in a way that made me fall silent.
"Come with me." "Who are you?" I asked, staring at him in shock.
The man was an enigma, and I couldn't make sense of anything that was happening "My name is Merlin Ambrosius," he replied, taking a step toward me, "and you need to come with me now."
"Why? What's going on?"
I asked, my mind still reeling from everything that had happened so far.
"There isn't much time left. If you don't return soon, it will be too late. If you do not want something catastrophic happen"
"What do you mean return?"
I asked, frowning in confusion.
"I have no place I could go back to."
Merlin's expression softened, and he let out a weary sigh.
"You may not know it yet young man, but you are the only one who can stop this."
"Stop what? What are you talking about?"
I asked, struggling to make sense of his words.
"I don't understand any of this." "You will," he replied with a nod.
"Just come with me and all will be revealed." I took a step back, shaking my head in disbelief.
This had to be some kind of crazy dream… right?
"Let go of me!"
I yelled, trying desperately to break free from his grip.
"You cannot escape your destiny," he said, his grip on my shoulder tightening.
"I can't just let you go. If you don't come with me, everything will be lost."
"What is this about? Who are you people?"
I demanded.
"We don't have time for questions. You must come with me now if you wish to survive," he said firmly.
"If I let you go, will you come with me willingly?" "Yes!" "Then follow me."
He released my shoulder and gestured toward the path ahead.
"Quickly now! There isn't much time!"
Something in his voice told me that there was no point in arguing further - he wouldn't let me go unless I came with him.
Sighing in resignation, I followed after him, hoping that I would get some answers soon.
"So what exactly is going on here?"
I asked as we walked through the forest.
