I never should have married my first husband.
How’s that for an opening line?
I bet you didn’t see that one coming.
But it’s the truth.
When I look back on my life, that’s the one thing I can point to and say, "There.
That was the moment everything went wrong."
I’m getting ahead of myself, though.
Let me start at the beginning.
My father was the mayor of Liberty, a small town in Missouri.
He was a good man, a great man, and everyone loved him.
He was the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it, and he was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone who asked for it.
He was also my best friend.
I know that sounds cliché, but it’s true.
My father was the one person in my life who I could always count on, no matter what.

I remember the day he went missing like it was yesterday.
It was a crisp autumn morning, and the leaves were just starting to turn.
Dad had gone out for his usual morning jog and never came back.
The whole town turned out to search for him, but it was as if he had vanished into thin air.
Weeks turned into months, and eventually, the search was called off.
My mother never recovered from the loss, and neither did I.
I sat in my dimly lit living room, staring at an old photograph of him.
In the picture, he was smiling, his arm around me as we stood in front of our house.
My hands trembled as I traced the outline of his face with my finger.
The phone rang, jolting me out of my reverie.
I picked it up on the third ring, my heart pounding in my chest.
"Hello?"
"Elizabeth."
The voice on the other end was cold, filled with years of resentment.
It was David, my first husband, recently released from prison.
"We need to talk," he said flatly.

"David," I stammered. "What do you want?"
"Meet me at Joe's Café in an hour," he demanded. "We have unfinished business."
I hesitated, feeling a mix of guilt and apprehension.
"Alright," I agreed reluctantly. "I'll be there."
The café was nearly empty when I arrived.
David sat in a corner booth, his intense eyes boring into mine as I approached.
He looked older, harder than I remembered.
"Sit down," he ordered curtly.
I slid into the seat opposite him, my hands clasped tightly in my lap.
"What is this about?" I asked nervously.
"You betrayed me," he spat out. "You left me to rot in that cell while you moved on with your life."
"I didn't have a choice!" I protested. "You know that!"
He cut me off with a wave of his hand.
"Save it," he snarled. "I've got new evidence that points to Doug."
My heart skipped a beat.
Doug was my second husband, and the thought that he might be involved in whatever David was talking about sent a chill down my spine.

"What are you talking about?" I demanded. "What evidence?"
David leaned forward, his eyes narrowing.
"I found letters," he said quietly. "Letters that prove Doug knew more about your father's disappearance than he's ever let on."
I felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me.
Shock and confusion swirled inside me as I tried to process what David was saying.
"No," I whispered. "That can't be true."
"It is," David insisted. "And if you don't believe me, I'll show you."
I stared at him, my mind racing.
If what he was saying was true, then everything I thought I knew about my father's disappearance—and about Doug—was a lie.
"I need to see those letters," I said finally.
David nodded grimly.
"Meet me tomorrow at noon," he said. "Same place."
As I left the café, my head was spinning with questions and doubts.
I knew one thing for certain: I had to uncover the truth, no matter what it took.
But as I walked towards my car, a shadowy figure stepped out from behind a nearby tree and blocked my path.
