I’m not sure when I fell in love with her.
It was probably sometime between the day she was born and the day I first held her in my arms.
I was six years old, and I remember looking down at her tiny face, her little fingers wrapped around my thumb, and knowing that I would do anything for her.
Anything to keep her safe.
Anything to make her happy.
Anything to see that beautiful smile light up her face.
I’m not sure when I realized that she was the most important person in my life.
It was probably sometime between the day she started kindergarten and the day she lost her first tooth.
I was eight years old, and I remember watching her run into the house, her backpack bouncing on her shoulders, and knowing that I would always be there for her.
Always to protect her.
Always to support her.
Now, as I sit on the bleachers, watching her from a distance, I can't shake the feeling that something is terribly wrong.
Summer sits alone under the old oak tree, her eyes distant and sad.
I can’t just sit here and do nothing.
I stand up and make my way down the bleachers, my heart pounding in my chest.
As I approach her, she doesn’t seem to notice me until I’m right beside her.
“Hey, Summer,” I say softly.
She looks up, startled, and quickly wipes her eyes. “Oh, hey Derek.”
I sit down next to her, trying to catch her gaze. “What’s going on? You seem... off.”
She forces a smile. “It’s nothing. Just a bad day.”
I glance at her arms and notice the bruises. They’re faint but unmistakable.
My stomach churns. “Summer, what happened to your arms?”
She quickly pulls her sleeves down, covering the marks. “It’s nothing. I’m fine.”
“Those don’t look like nothing,” I insist. “Please, tell me what’s going on.”
Her eyes well up with tears, and she looks away. “Derek, it’s complicated.”
I reach out and gently touch her arm. “You can trust me. Whatever it is, we’ll figure it out together.”
She takes a deep breath, as if gathering the courage to speak. “It’s...”
Before she can finish, her phone buzzes loudly in her pocket.
She pulls it out and glances at the screen.
Her face goes pale.
“I have to go,” she whispers, standing up abruptly.
“Wait!” I grab her hand. “What’s going on? Who was that?”
She shakes her head, tears streaming down her face. “I can’t explain right now. Please, just let me go.”
I reluctantly release her hand and watch as she runs off towards the parking lot.
My mind races with questions and worry.
Who could have sent that message?
And what are they doing to Summer?
I stand there for a moment, feeling helpless and frustrated.
I can't let her go alone.
Not like this.
I follow her at a distance, keeping to the shadows as she heads towards the outskirts of town.
The sun dips below the horizon, casting long, eerie shadows across the deserted streets.
Summer’s pace quickens, and my heart races to keep up.
She finally stops in front of an old, abandoned warehouse.
Its windows are shattered, and the walls are covered in graffiti.
Summer glances around nervously before slipping through a side door.
I wait a moment, my breath coming in short bursts.
Then I move forward, carefully pushing the door open just enough to slip inside.
The interior is dimly lit by a few flickering bulbs hanging from the ceiling.
Dust motes dance in the air, and the smell of mildew is overpowering.
I see Summer standing in the center of the room, facing a shadowy figure.
The tension is thick, almost suffocating.
“Why are you doing this?” Summer’s voice trembles as she speaks.
The figure steps into the light, revealing a gaunt man with sharp features and cold eyes.
It’s her estranged uncle, Richard.
“You know why,” Richard sneers. “You owe me.”
“I don’t owe you anything!” Summer’s voice cracks with emotion. “You’ve been blackmailing me for months. I can’t take it anymore.”
Richard laughs, a cruel sound that echoes through the empty warehouse. “You think you can just walk away? You’re in too deep now.”
My protective instincts kick in.
I can’t let him hurt her any longer.
I step forward, my voice steady but firm. “Leave her alone, Richard.”
Both Summer and Richard turn to face me, surprise etched on their faces.
“Derek?” Summer whispers, her eyes wide with fear and relief.
Richard’s expression hardens. “This doesn’t concern you, boy. Leave now while you still can.”
I take another step forward, my fists clenched at my sides. “It concerns me when someone I care about is being hurt. I won’t let you do this to her.”
Richard narrows his eyes and takes a threatening step towards me. “You have no idea what you’re getting yourself into.”
“I don’t care,” I say firmly. “This ends now.”
Summer moves closer to me, her hand gripping my arm tightly. “Derek, please be careful.”
I glance at her and nod reassuringly before turning back to Richard. “You’re going to leave her alone. You’re not going to contact her again. Do you understand?”
Richard laughs again, but there’s a hint of uncertainty in his eyes now. “And what makes you think I’ll listen to you?”
I take another step forward until I’m standing directly in front of him. “Because if you don’t, I’ll make sure everyone knows what kind of person you really are. The police will be very interested in your activities.”
For a moment, Richard seems to consider his options.
Then he snarls and takes a step back. “Fine. But this isn’t over.”
He turns and storms out of the warehouse, leaving Summer and me standing in the dim light.
Summer collapses against me, sobbing uncontrollably.
I hold her tightly, my heart aching for her.
“It’s okay,” I whisper softly. “You’re safe now.”
She looks up at me with tear-filled eyes and nods slowly.
But as we stand there in the abandoned warehouse, I can’t shake the feeling that this is far from over.
