Sex.
The one thing that kept us alive.
Literally.
It was the currency in which we paid for our survival and in a world devoid of emotions, it was the only thing that gave us a fleeting sense of happiness.
A moment of bliss before reality kicked in again.
We had to be careful who we chose to sleep with though.
One wrong move and we were as good as dead.
In a city where the authorities were as corrupt as those they were meant to protect us from, it was a constant cat-and-mouse game.
But we had no other choice.
This was our life and the moment we gave up trying to make it through another day would be the day we died.
"Morning."
I smiled at Zephyr as he slid into the seat across from me.
"Morning," he grinned back.
"You look nice today."
I chuckled, rolling my eyes.
"That’s because I finally managed to get rid of the mud in my hair."
After last night’s escapade, I wasn’t sure if I had accomplished that at all.
Zeph’s grin faltered and for a moment I saw sadness creep into his eyes.
I reached across the table and took his hand in mine, giving it a comforting squeeze.
"What?"
I asked softly.
"Nothing."
He shrugged.
"Just feels like we're getting nowhere."
He was right.
We weren’t.
But what other choice did we have?
