Kenny,a magical savant performs a private late night magic show for his two friends Jane and Heather on the roof of the dorm building under the full moon
Kenny Thompson
secretive, and talented. Kenny performs a private magic show for his friends Jane and Heather on the dorm roof under the full moon. He struggles with balancing his magical life and college life, fearing exposure. His friendship with Jane and Heather is deep, but he keeps his true nature hidden from them.
Heather Martinez
loyal, and cautious. Heather attends Kenny's magic show on the dorm roof but remains skeptical about its authenticity. She values her friendship with Kenny and Jane deeply but often questions Kenny's motives behind his performances.
Jane Wilson
supportive, and adventurous. Jane enjoys Kenny's magic show on the dorm roof, unaware of its true nature. She shares a close bond with Kenny and Heather, often seeking excitement and thrills. Her friendship with Kenny is genuine but lacks understanding of his magical abilities.
"Kenny, how did you do that?"
Jane asks.
There is a touch of full moon light on the dorm roof and three of us are sitting there.
I just finished my private magic show for those two girls who are among my best friends.
"You shouldn’t have told us that it was going to be a trick!"
"Well…"
I look at Heather.
She looks skeptical.
Heather always does.
"Why do you do that? Every time I come to watch your magic show, you tell me it’s a trick. Then you act all surprised when I try to figure out how you did it."
Jane says.
"Well…"
I look at Heather again.
She doesn’t say anything.
"I guess I just wanted to perform for you guys. I know that you both like magic and all…"
"Perform?"
Heather says.
"Yes. Well…"
"I still don’t know how you did it," Jane says.
"You see, magic is mostly in the eyes of the beholder."
I put my arm around Jane’s shoulders.
"What I mean is that people tend to believe what they expect to believe. If they go to a magic show, they expect to be tricked in various ways. If I tell them it’s going to be a trick, then they will try to figure out how I did it instead of just watching the show."
"Is that really true?"
Jane asks.
"Yes. Well…"
"I still don’t know how you did it," she says.
"How did you make that coin disappear?"
"It’s… well…"
I look at Heather.
She doesn’t say anything but I can still see her skeptical eyes staring at me.
I pull two playing cards from my pocket.
I hold them up in the moonlight, so they can see.
Jane leans forward.
Heather looks at me with a skeptical expression.
I flip the cards over, showing them the front and back.
My fingers tremble slightly.
I don’t know why, but my hands are always warm when I perform real magic.
The cards are also warm to the touch, as if they are alive.
I hesitate for a second, then decide to do it.
With a quick gesture, I seem to crumple up the cards, but they just disappear.
Jane gasps.
Heather frowns.
Jane jumps forward and puts her hand on her chest.
"Kenny! What did you do?"
She reaches inside her shirt and pulls out one of the playing cards.
It’s the Ace of Spades.
Heather's eyes widen, and for the first time, she whispers, "Do it again."
I stand up and walk over to her.
She takes a half-step backward, but she doesn’t turn her back on me.
Her eyes are locked on mine.
The moonlight catches the silver rings on my fingers as I reach for her face.
Jane is watching us from beside us.
Her breath is visible in the cool night air.
I can feel the familiar warmth building in my fingertips.
I pretend to pluck something from behind her ear, and the dark strands of hair brush against my hand.
I pause for a second, then reveal the Queen of Hearts between my thumb and forefinger.
Heather’s eyes widen, and she reaches up to touch her ear, checking to see if I had a hidden compartment there.
I walk back and forth in front of their chairs, building up to the next trick.
The gravel crunches under my feet.
I stop in front of them, facing them directly.
I raise my hands dramatically, and the silver rings catch the moonlight.
Jane leans forward in her chair, eager for more.
Heather crosses her arms over her chest, still analyzing the previous trick.
I plant my feet shoulder-width apart and draw myself up to my full height.
The familiar warmth tingles in my fingertips.
"Okay, girls. This next one is going to be different. I’m only going to do it this one time. I don’t want you to tell anyone about it."
I look them both in the eyes.
"It’s not a trick."
I hold my hands out in front of me, palms up.
I focus on the flow of energy through my body.
It’s like a warm syrup that runs down my fingers and up my arms.
It’s stronger than ever before.
Jane leans forward on her concrete perch.
Heather uncrosses her arms, and both of them are watching intently.
My silver rings are heating up against my skin as I concentrate, pouring power into the space between my palms.
The air is getting thick around us, heavier than before.
I close my eyes and whisper words I’ve never shared with anyone.
The magic is building in front of me, more than I’ve ever done before.
My hands are starting to shake from the effort of keeping it contained.
Jane's voice cuts through the tension, "Kenny, what's happening? I can feel it in the air."
Heather's eyes dart between my hands and my face, her voice barely audible, "Is this... real magic?"
I open my eyes, meeting theirs with a solemn nod, "Yes, and it's something I can't control for long."
I spread my trembling hands apart, and the pure magical energy bursts from between my palms.
A stream of blue-white light spirals outward in each direction, weaving an intricate pattern in the air.
The light catches my silver rings, multiplying into a thousand shimmering points that dance around us like fireflies.
Jane gasps and reaches out to touch them.
Heather stumbles backward, tripping over her chair in the process.
The display becomes more intense, swirling around us in a dome of light that reaches high into the night sky.
I feel the power building and I try to direct it.
My heart is pounding in my chest.
I can feel the magic pulsing in sync with it.
The lights around us pulse faster and then they’re beating in time with my racing heartbeat.
I’m not sure how I’m doing it, but I am.
Jane's voice trembles with awe, "Kenny, this is incredible... but what if you can't stop it?"
Heather scrambles to her feet, urgency in her tone, "We need to find a way to control it before it gets out of hand."
I nod, my voice steady despite the chaos, "I know, and that's why I need your help to focus it."
The magical dome pulses brighter, and I can feel it growing stronger.
Jane takes a step closer to me, her hand reaching out.
Her fingers brush against mine, and the jolt of electricity sends a shock through my body.
The lights around us flare wildly, reacting to the contact.
I try to pull my hand away, but she grips it tightly.
Her eyes are wide with wonder as she watches the swirling energy.
I can feel the magic flowing between us like an electric current.
Heather's voice rings out behind me, "Kenny, look out!"
I turn to see the magical dome starting to shrink inward.
Jane's touch steadies my shaking hands, and I feel her strength merging with mine.
The power surges through us, seeking balance.
Jane's voice is filled with determination, "Kenny, we can do this together. Just focus on the rhythm."
Heather steps closer, her voice firm and reassuring, "I'll guide you both. We just need to synchronize our breaths."
I nod, feeling their support anchoring me, "Alright, let's bring it back under control."
Heather's hand settles on my shoulder, her touch sending a jolt through my body that makes the magical dome pulse even brighter.
The three of us stand in a triangle, our bodies connected by touch as the wild energy courses between us.
Jane's grip on my right hand tightens, while Heather's fingers dig into my left shoulder.
The magical dome contracts and expands with our synchronized breathing.
I whisper the secret words again, this time hearing Jane and Heather echo them instinctively.
The magic responds to our unified voices, the chaotic swirling beginning to smooth into steady rotating rings of light.
Jane's voice is a mix of excitement and urgency, "Kenny, I think we're getting the hang of it!"
Heather nods, her eyes locked on the calming energy, "Keep going, we just need to maintain this rhythm."
I take a deep breath, feeling the magic stabilize, "Together, we can control it and maybe even learn its secrets."
I guide Jane and Heather through another set of whispered words, our voices blending in perfect harmony.
The wild energy coursing through our linked hands begins to settle, transforming from erratic bursts into smooth waves of light.
Jane's grip on my right hand relaxes as the magic responds to our unified rhythm, while Heather's fingers ease their pressure on my shoulder as she maintains our steady breathing pattern.
The magical dome above us compresses inward, its frantic swirling slowing to a gentle rotation.
I direct the converging energy downward, feeling it wrap around us like a warm blanket.
Closing my eyes, I focus on the magical flow, sensing the power coursing through me.
I can feel Jane's hand in mine, warm and steady, while Heather's firm grip remains on my shoulder.
The dome of light pulsates softly now, almost hypnotic in its rhythm.
I concentrate on channeling a thin stream of power through my silver rings into Jane's palm.
As I do so, her breathing slows to match the rhythm of the magic, her eyes growing distant and unfocused.
"Jane," I whisper her name, and she turns to me with a dreamy expression.
Heather's voice cuts through the tranquility, "Kenny, something's wrong. Let go!"
