I'm a merman living with my human girlfriend but she doesn't know I'm a merman. I have to take a bath to soak my tail so I sneak out of the bed and transform but my girlfriend awakens and tries to enter the bathroom
Dylan Hart
the merman in a human relationship, dating Sarah, lean with iridescent scales and long hair, secretive yet deeply caring
Mark Stevens
Dylan's best friend and confidant, not in a relationship with either main character, athletic build with short black hair, loyal and humorous
Sarah Jennings
Dylan's unknowing human girlfriend, in a relationship with Dylan, petite with curly brown hair, curious and loving
I woke up early, as I did every morning, and slipped out of bed.
Sarah was still asleep, her curly brown hair fanned out on the pillow.
I watched her for a moment, my heart swelling with love for her.
She was so beautiful, so perfect.
I hated lying to her, but I had no choice.
If she ever found out the truth about me, she would never forgive me.
I went into the bathroom and closed the door behind me.
The bathroom was small and dark, and I turned on the light over the mirror.
My reflection stared back at me, and I studied myself in the glass.
I was tall and lean, with iridescent scales that covered my body from head to toe.
My hair was long and black, hanging in wet strands around my face.
I looked like any other twenty-two-year-old guy, but I wasn’t human.
I locked the door with a soft click, my heart pounding in my chest.
The sound of Sarah's steady breathing from the bedroom was a comforting reminder that she was still asleep.
I turned on the faucet, letting the water fill the tub.
As the steam began to rise, I felt a familiar tingle in my legs.
I took a deep breath and stepped into the water.
The transformation was immediate; my legs fused together, scales shimmering under the bathroom light as they formed a sleek, powerful tail.
I sighed in relief, sinking deeper into the warm water.
The sensation of soaking my scales was indescribable.
It was like coming home after a long day, every muscle relaxing in perfect harmony.
I closed my eyes, allowing myself a rare moment of peace.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
"Dylan?" Sarah's voice called out, muffled by the wooden barrier between us.
My eyes snapped open, panic surging through me.
Water splashed everywhere as I scrambled to sit up, my tail thrashing in the confined space.
"Yeah?" I called back, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Are you okay in there?" she asked, her tone laced with suspicion.
She tried the doorknob, finding it locked. "Why is the door locked?"
My mind raced for an excuse.
"I... I just needed some privacy," I stammered, cursing myself for how weak that sounded.
"Privacy? Since when do you lock the door for a bath?" Her frustration was evident now. "What's going on, Dylan?"
I could hear her pacing outside the door, her footsteps growing louder with each pass.
I had to think fast. If she saw me like this...
"Just give me a minute!" I shouted back, desperately trying to hide my tail beneath the water.
"Dylan, open this door right now!" Her voice was firm and unyielding.
I could hear her fumbling with something—probably a hairpin or some other makeshift tool to pick the lock.
My heart raced even faster.
"Sarah, please!" I pleaded. "Just trust me!"
There was silence for a moment. Then I heard her sigh deeply. "Dylan... if there's something you're hiding from me..."
Her words trailed off, but the implication was clear. She would not let this go.
I looked around frantically for anything that could help me buy more time. My eyes landed on a towel hanging nearby. Maybe if I could—
The doorknob rattled again, more forcefully this time. "I'm coming in," she warned.
In one swift motion, I grabbed the towel and draped it over my tail just as the lock clicked open.
The door swung inward and Sarah stood there, her eyes wide with confusion and concern.
"Dylan?" she whispered, taking in the scene before her: water everywhere, me half-submerged in the tub with a towel awkwardly covering my lower half.
Her gaze locked onto mine, searching for answers.
