Jack Thompson

Emily Waters
the mermaid girlfriend, girlfriend of Jack, slim with long blonde hair, secretive and loving
Sarah Jennings
Emily's best friend and confidante, friend of Emily, tall with curly red hair, witty and loyal
I woke up to the sound of running water.
It was coming from the bathroom, and I could hear a woman humming softly.
I smiled to myself.
My girlfriend, Emily, was in there.
We’d been together for a few months now, and I was still amazed that she had agreed to go out with me.
She was beautiful, with long blonde hair and a figure that made my mouth water.
I was just an average guy, with short brown hair and an average build.
But she said she loved me, and I believed her.
I got out of bed and walked over to the bathroom door.
"Emily?"
I called out.
"Are you okay in there?"
She didn’t answer me, but the humming continued.
I pushed open the door and stepped inside.
The shower was running, but the curtain was closed.
"Emily?"
I called out again.
I pushed the shower curtain aside.
There she was, but not as I had ever seen her before.
Emily's legs were gone, replaced by a shimmering, iridescent tail that flicked nervously in the water.
My mouth dropped open, and I stumbled back, knocking over a bottle of shampoo and sending it clattering to the floor.
"Jack!" Emily gasped, her eyes wide with fear and guilt.
She tried to cover herself with her hands, but there was no hiding what I had just seen.
"What... what is this?" I stammered, my mind racing with confusion and betrayal.
"Please, Jack," she pleaded, her voice trembling. "I can explain."
I felt a mix of anger and pity welling up inside me, but I managed to nod, urging her to continue.
"I’m... I'm not like other people," she began, her eyes darting around as if searching for the right words. "I'm a mermaid."
"A mermaid?" I echoed, incredulous. "This isn't real. This can't be real."
"It is," she insisted. "I've been living on land for years now, trying to blend in. But every so often, I need to return to the water."
I took a deep breath, trying to process what she was saying. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I wanted to," she said softly. "But I was scared. Scared of how you'd react. Scared of what might happen if people found out."
The tension in the room was palpable as we both grappled with the revelation.
"So all this time," I said slowly, "you've been hiding this from me?"
"Yes," she admitted, tears welling up in her eyes. "But not because I didn't trust you. Because I was afraid."
I felt my protective instincts clash with my sense of normalcy. The woman I loved was something out of a fairy tale, and yet here she was, real and vulnerable before me.
"What do you need from me?" I asked finally.
"Understanding," she replied. "And your help to keep this secret."
I nodded slowly, still trying to wrap my head around everything. "Okay. We'll figure this out together."
Emily's eyes softened with relief, but before either of us could say another word, there was a loud crash from outside the bathroom window.
We both turned towards the noise, our hearts pounding in unison.
"Did you hear that?" I whispered.
Emily nodded, her tail flicking anxiously in the water.
I moved towards the window cautiously and peered outside.
What I saw made my blood run cold.
A shadowy figure was lurking just beyond the glass, watching us intently.
"Jack," Emily whispered urgently. "We need to get out of here."
I turned back to her, my mind racing with possibilities and dangers.
"We can't stay here," I agreed. "But where can we go?"
Before she could answer, the bathroom door burst open behind us.
