Sarah Jennings

"Emily, wait up."
I called out to her as she walked away from her locker.
She turned around and smiled at me.
"Hey, Jason. What’s up?"
"Nothing much. I was just wondering if you wanted to go to the library with me after school."
I asked her.
Her eyes widened in surprise.
"Are you serious?"
"Yeah, I have a big test coming up and I need to study. And I was hoping you could help me out."
I said, trying to sound casual about it.
She bit her bottom lip and looked down at her feet for a moment before looking back up at me.
"Sure, I’d love to help you out."
She said with a smile.
I felt like doing a victory dance right there in the middle of the hallway.
But instead, I just smiled at her and told her that I would meet her outside of the library after school.
I had been in love with Emily Carter for as long as I could remember.
The final bell rang, and I hurried to the library, my heart pounding in my chest.
I spotted Emily waiting by the entrance, her auburn hair catching the late afternoon sunlight.
"Hey," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Hey, Jason," she replied, her smile making my stomach do somersaults.
We walked inside together, the quiet hum of the library wrapping around us like a comforting blanket.
We found a secluded corner near the back, away from prying eyes and curious ears.
Emily pulled out her notebook and a couple of textbooks, spreading them out on the table.
"So, what do you need help with?" she asked, looking up at me with those big, green eyes.
"Uh, chemistry," I stammered, pulling out my own books. "I'm really struggling with the periodic table."
She laughed softly. "Alright, let's start with the basics then."
As she explained the elements and their properties, I tried to focus on her words. But my mind kept drifting to how close we were sitting, how her hair smelled faintly of lavender.
"Jason? Are you even listening?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah, sorry," I muttered, forcing myself to concentrate.
But it was no use. My heart was racing too fast, my palms were sweaty. I had to tell her. Now or never.
"Emily," I said suddenly, cutting her off mid-sentence.
She looked at me, puzzled. "What is it?"
I took a deep breath and reached out to take her hand in mine. Her skin was warm and soft.
"Jason?" she whispered, confusion flickering in her eyes.
"I... I need to tell you something," I said, my voice trembling. "I've been in love with you for as long as I can remember."
Her eyes widened in shock. She opened her mouth to say something but no words came out.
Before she could respond, the library doors burst open with a loud bang.
Sarah stormed in, her face red with fury.
"There you are!" she shouted, marching towards us. "I knew it! You’re trying to steal him from me!"
Emily's hand slipped from mine as she stood up abruptly. "Sarah, what are you talking about?"
"You know exactly what I'm talking about!" Sarah spat back. "You've always wanted Jason for yourself!"
I stood up too, trying to calm things down. "Sarah, it's not like that—"
"Shut up!" Sarah screamed at me before turning back to Emily. "How could you do this to me? We were friends!"
Emily looked between Sarah and me, torn and speechless.
The tension in the air was palpable. The librarian peeked over her desk but didn't intervene.
My heart pounded louder than ever as I watched Emily struggle with her emotions.
