I turned to my partner, who was smiling.
"Tell me you’re not buying this crap, Sarah."
"Of course not," she said.
"But he is good. I’m not seeing any wires or anything. Maybe he’s using misdirection?"
"Maybe," I said.
"Though I think I was watching his hands pretty closely."
I looked back at Kenny, who was holding up his empty hand again.
He dropped it, palm toward me, and the silver ball appeared.
It bounced out of his hand, into the air, and came down with a loud clang.
Kenny had also palmed a small metal ashtray, which now held the ball.
"Damn, that’s good," Sarah said.
"I know, right? He’s got to be using a dummy ball or—"
I stopped suddenly as Kenny’s eyes locked on mine.
His mouth moved, just a slight movement, like he was saying something.
"Wait a minute," I said to Sarah.
"He’s not really doing magic, is he?"
Sarah looked at me like I’d lost my mind.
"Of course not," she said.
"But—"
He didn’t have any wires or machinery or anything else that could make the tricks work.
And we’d seen all of the people on stage and they were clean, too.
The Illusionist
Kenny gestured us inside, and we followed him into his dimly lit apartment.
The air was thick with the scent of sandalwood and smoke.
He motioned for us to sit on a worn leather couch.
He stood in front of us, his eyes twinkling with mischief.
"Ready for the real magic?"
His voice was smooth as silk.
Sarah and I exchanged a skeptical look, but nodded.
"Sure," I said.
Kenny started off with a simple card trick, shuffling the deck and asking me to pick a card.
I did, and he made it disappear, only to produce it behind my ear.
I watched closely, trying to find the hidden compartment or sleight of hand that made it work, but I couldn’t see anything.
Then he did a coin trick, making a quarter appear in Sarah’s hand.
The Illusionist
She looked at me, her eyes wide with amazement.
I shook my head slightly; she was buying this crap?
But then Kenny did something that made my jaw drop.
He held up the deck of cards and fanned them out in front of us.
They floated in mid-air, spinning slowly before our eyes. Sarah leaned forward, her skepticism momentarily forgotten.
"How are you doing this?"
Kenny smiled and extended his hand toward me.
"Do you really want to know?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Yes," I replied, feeling an unexpected urgency in my chest.
Kenny leaned closer, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the room feel smaller.
The Illusionist
"Allow me to demonstrate," he said, holding up the Ace of Spades and the Joker.
He dropped them into his palm, and in an instant, they were gone.
I looked at Sarah, who was staring at me with a bewildered expression.
"Check your underwear," Kenny said, his voice smooth as silk.
Sarah hesitated for a moment before reaching into her bra and pulling out the Ace of Spades.
Her eyes went wide with disbelief.
I did the same, finding the Joker tucked into the strap of my thong.
Sarah gasped, her voice trembling.
"How did you do that?" she asked, eyes darting between Kenny and me.
Kenny chuckled softly, his gaze never leaving mine.
"Magic is just the beginning," he said, his tone laced with a hint of something darker.
The Illusionist
His grin widened as he stepped back, gesturing for us to stay put.
"Brace yourselves," he said, his voice dripping with anticipation.
I exchanged a wary glance with Sarah, who shrugged but didn’t move.
Kenny reached into his pocket and pulled out a small vial filled with a shimmering liquid.
He uncorked it, the scent of something metallic wafting through the room.
With a flourish, he poured the liquid onto his palm.
It began to sizzle and steam, forming intricate patterns that danced across his skin.
The Illusionist
I watched in rapt attention as Kenny blew gently on his palm.
The shimmering liquid patterns leapt into the air, morphing into a flock of delicate origami birds.
They fluttered around the room, their paper wings rustling softly.
Sarah’s mouth dropped open, her eyes tracking the birds’ graceful flight.
I reached out to touch one, but it darted away, leaving me grasping at thin air.
Kenny’s grin widened, and he gestured for us to follow the birds as they circled back towards him.
The Illusionist
I hesitated, feeling the dampness in my thong.
It was a reminder of the unsettling power Kenny wielded, a power that went far beyond mere sleight of hand.
Sarah and I exchanged glances, her eyes reflecting the same unease that churned within me.
Kenny gestured for us to sit at his small kitchen table, his grin never faltering.
The room seemed to crackle with an energy I couldn’t quite explain, as if the very air itself was charged with anticipation.
He placed a deck of cards between us, his movements fluid and deliberate.
"This will be something truly extraordinary," he said, his voice low and hypnotic.
With a flick of his wrist, he began to shuffle the cards.
As he did, they seemed to blur together, their edges glowing faintly in the dim light of the room.
Sarah leaned forward, her skepticism momentarily forgotten in the face of the inexplicable.
I watched Kenny’s hands closely, each movement precise and calculated.
The Illusionist
As he shuffled the cards, a strange heat began to build within me.
It was as if his hands were weaving a spell, one that seeped into my skin and coursed through my veins.
Sarah’s eyes were glued to the cards, her skepticism slowly giving way to a mesmerized fascination.
I glanced at her, noting the flush rising in her cheeks.
The room seemed to grow warmer, the air thickening with an almost palpable energy.
Kenny continued to shuffle the cards, his voice a low hum that wove through the air like a spell.
I felt a sudden jolt of desire, a primal urge that coursed through my veins like liquid fire.
It was as if Kenny’s power had awakened something within me, something I couldn’t quite explain or control.
I glanced around the room, my eyes settling on Kenny’s bed in the corner.
It was a tangled mess of sheets and blankets, invitingly disheveled.
My heart raced as I considered the possibility of what might happen next.
With a final flourish, Kenny laid the cards down between us.
The Illusionist
They seemed to shimmer and glow, their edges crackling with an otherworldly energy. "Now," he said, his voice husky with anticipation, "let us see what secrets they hold."
As he spoke, his gaze locked onto mine, his eyes burning with an intensity that left me breathless.
I felt a shiver run down my spine, my pulse pounding in time with the strange power that pulsed through the room.
Sarah’s eyes darted back and forth between us, her expression a mix of confusion and fascination.
"Choose a card," Kenny said, his voice low and hypnotic.
I reached out hesitantly, my hand trembling slightly as I touched the deck.
The cards seemed to leap into my hand, their edges crackling with an electric energy.
I turned them over, revealing a symbol etched into their surface.
It was unlike anything I had ever seen before - intricate and pulsing with an otherworldly power. "This is impossible," Sarah breathed, her eyes wide with wonder.
Kenny smiled, his gaze never leaving mine.
"This is just the beginning," he said, his voice dripping with anticipation.
As he spoke, the room seemed to grow even more charged with energy.
The air crackled and pulsed with an almost palpable power, as if the very fabric of reality itself was bending to Kenny’s will.
Sarah leaned in closer, her voice barely a whisper. "What are you really doing, Kenny? This isn't just magic tricks, is it?"
Kenny's eyes flickered with something unreadable, and he replied softly, "It's a glimpse into what lies beyond the veil, Sarah. Are you ready to see the truth?"
