I’m late.
I’m late because I’m a moron, and I got the time wrong.
I’m supposed to meet America at 3:00, but when I get to the diner, she’s not there.
And then I look at my phone, and it’s 2:30, and I’m like "no, no, no."
I start to walk back to my car, but then I stop.
Because I’m here.
And she’s going to be here soon.
And that means I can use this time to my advantage.
I take a deep breath and head towards the back alley behind the diner.
There are a few things about this whole situation that have been bugging me.
Like how convenient it is that America just happened to have a lead on a Hydra base in the middle of Brooklyn.
Or how she happened to mention it right after I told her about the Young Avengers, and how badly we need more leads on Hydra.
It’s too convenient.
Shadows of Heroes: The Young Avengers Rise
I slip into the narrow alley, my footsteps echoing off the brick walls.
The smell of old grease and discarded food hits me, but I push through, determined.
I pull out my phone and start recording.
"Okay, Kate," I whisper to myself. "Let's see what we can find."
The alley is cluttered with trash cans and broken crates.
I move past them, scanning for anything that might be out of place.
A glint catches my eye near a stack of boxes.
I kneel down and brush aside some debris, revealing a small metallic device.
It looks like a tracker.
"Interesting," I mutter, turning it over in my hands.
Why would there be a tracker here?
And who placed it?
I pocket the device and continue my search.
A door at the end of the alley catches my attention.
It's slightly ajar, and there's a faint light coming from inside.
I approach cautiously, peeking through the crack.

The room beyond is dimly lit, filled with more crates and what looks like surveillance equipment.
My heart races as I step inside, careful not to make a sound.
I scan the room quickly, noting the cameras and monitors displaying various parts of the city.
This is definitely not just a storage room.
I pull out my phone again, capturing everything on video.
"America, what are you hiding?" I whisper to myself.
Suddenly, I hear footsteps behind me.
I freeze, my heart pounding in my chest.
The door creaks open wider, and a shadow falls across the floor.
"Kate?" a familiar voice calls out softly.
It's America.
I turn around slowly, trying to keep my expression neutral.
"America," I say, forcing a smile. "You're early."
She steps into the room, her eyes narrowing as she takes in the scene.
"What are you doing back here?" she asks, suspicion lacing her tone.
Shadows of Heroes: The Young Avengers Rise
"I could ask you the same thing," I reply, holding up my phone. "Care to explain all this?"
America's jaw tightens. "It's not what it looks like."
"Really?" I challenge. "Because it looks like you're running some kind of surveillance operation."
She takes a step closer, her eyes locked onto mine. "Kate, you have to trust me."
"Trust you?" I scoff. "How can I trust you when you're hiding things from me?"
America's expression softens for a moment before hardening again. "There's more going on here than you know."
"Then tell me," I demand. "What's really happening?"
Before she can answer, there's a loud crash from outside the room.
We both turn towards the noise, tension crackling in the air.
America grabs my arm. "We need to go. Now."
"But—"
"No time," she insists, pulling me towards the door. "I'll explain everything later."
Reluctantly, I follow her out of the room and back into the alley.
We barely make it halfway down before we're confronted by two men in dark suits blocking our path.
Shadows of Heroes: The Young Avengers Rise
"Who are you?" I demand, trying to keep my voice steady.
One of the men steps forward, his expression unreadable.
He reaches into his jacket pocket, and for a split second, I think he's going for a weapon.
Instead, he pulls out a badge and holds it up for us to see.
"S.H.I.E.L.D.," he says firmly. "Agent Thompson."
I blink, taken aback.
"What the hell is S.H.I.E.L.D. doing here?"
America's grip on my arm tightens as she steps forward.
"I didn't know they were involved," she mutters under her breath.
Agent Thompson lowers his badge but keeps his eyes locked on us.
"We've been monitoring this area for weeks.
We have reason to believe Hydra is using this location as a front."
My mind races, trying to piece everything together.
"So you're saying America was right about the Hydra base?"
Thompson nods.
"But we didn't expect civilians to get involved."
Shadows of Heroes: The Young Avengers Rise
He glances at America with a hint of disapproval.
"Hey," I snap, stepping in front of America. "We're not just civilians. We're Young Avengers."
The other agent, a woman with short blonde hair, steps forward.
"That's exactly why you need to leave this to us. It's too dangerous."
America shakes her head. "We can handle ourselves."
Thompson sighs, clearly frustrated.
"Look, we don't have time for this. If you're going to stay, you need to follow our lead."
Before I can respond, there's another crash from behind us, closer this time.
We all turn to see a group of armed men emerging from the shadows.
"Hydra," Thompson mutters under his breath.
The alley erupts into chaos as the Hydra agents open fire.
I dive behind a stack of crates, pulling America down with me.
"Stay low!" I shout over the noise.
Thompson and the other S.H.I.E.L.D. agent return fire, their movements precise and practiced.
"We need to get out of here," America yells, her eyes wide with fear.
Shadows of Heroes: The Young Avengers Rise
I nod, my heart pounding in my chest.
"Follow me!"
We crawl along the ground, using the crates and trash cans as cover.
Bullets whiz past us, and I can feel the heat from the gunfire on my skin.
I spot a side door leading into another building and make a break for it.
America is right behind me.
I slam the door shut behind us and lean against it, trying to catch my breath.
The room we're in is dark and musty, filled with old furniture and cobwebs.
I can hear the sounds of the fight continuing outside.
"We can't stay here," America says urgently.
I nod in agreement and start looking for another way out.
A small window catches my eye.
It's high up on the wall but big enough for us to squeeze through.
"Over here," I say, pointing to the window.
America helps me move an old desk underneath it so we can climb up.
I push the window open and hoist myself up, wincing as I scrape my arm on the frame.
Once I'm through, I turn back to help America.
She climbs up quickly and joins me outside.
We're in another alley now, this one quieter than the last.
I can still hear distant gunfire but it's muffled by the walls around us.
"We need to find somewhere safe," I say, looking around for any sign of danger.
America nods and starts moving down the alley.
I follow her, my senses on high alert.
We reach the end of the alley and emerge onto a busy street.
People are going about their day, completely unaware of the chaos happening just a few blocks away.
"We should blend in," America suggests.
I agree and we start walking casually down the sidewalk.
My mind is still racing with questions but now isn't the time for answers.
We need to get somewhere safe first.
As we turn a corner, I glance back one last time at the alley we came from.
The sounds of gunfire have stopped but I know this isn't over yet.
