I was summoned by a child.
A small, curly-haired girl with wide eyes and a gap-toothed smile.
She was so young, she didn’t even know what she’d done.
She thought it was just a game.
But the moment she called my name, I was hers.
And she was mine.
I appeared in a flash of red and black smoke, my wings unfurling behind me as I took in my surroundings.
I was in a small room, lit only by the dim light of a candle on the floor.
The air was thick with the smell of incense and the sound of chanting still echoed in my ears.
The girl stood in front of me, her eyes wide with wonder as she took in my tall, imposing form.
"Who are you?" she asked, her voice barely more than a whisper.
I smiled down at her, revealing my sharp teeth.
"I am Xalvath," I said, my voice like honey.
"And you have summoned me."
She looked up at me, her green eyes wide with fear.
"I didn’t mean to," she said quickly.
"I was just playing."
I knelt down in front of her so that we were eye to eye.
"It doesn’t matter," I said gently.
"The ritual has been performed, and now I am bound to you."

Her trembling hands clutched the hem of her dress, and she took a step back.
"But... what does that mean?" she asked, her voice quivering.
"It means," I said, my tone soothing, "that we are connected. For life."
Her eyes grew even wider, if that were possible. "Forever?"
"Yes," I replied, standing up to my full height. "But do not be afraid. I am here to protect you."
She seemed to relax a little at that, though her curiosity was far from sated. "Protect me from what?"
"From anything that would harm you," I said, my voice still as sweet as honey. "There are many dangers in this world, Elara."
She blinked up at me. "How do you know my name?"
"I know many things," I said with a smile. "It is part of my nature."
Elara's fear slowly turned into fascination. She took a hesitant step forward, her eyes never leaving mine. "What else can you do?"
I chuckled softly. "Many things. But first, you must understand the gravity of what has happened here tonight."

Before I could elaborate, the door burst open with a blinding flash of light. Gabriel stood there, his wings glowing with an ethereal radiance that filled the room.
"Step away from her, demon!" he commanded, his voice stern and unyielding.
Elara jumped and looked between us, torn and confused.
"Gabriel," I said smoothly, not moving an inch. "Always so dramatic."
Gabriel's eyes narrowed as he stepped closer, his presence filling the room with a palpable tension. "You have no place here, Xalvath."
I smirked, folding my wings behind me. "On the contrary, I was summoned here by this young one."
Elara looked up at Gabriel with wide eyes. "Is he dangerous?"
Gabriel's gaze softened as he looked at her. "Yes, Elara. Summoning demons is fraught with peril."
"But he said he's here to protect me," she protested.
Gabriel shot me a look of pure distrust before turning back to her. "Demons are deceitful by nature. You cannot trust him."
I raised an eyebrow and crossed my arms over my chest. "And yet here I am, bound by the ritual she performed."
Elara stood between us, her small frame dwarfed by our towering forms. She looked from Gabriel to me and back again, clearly torn.
"What should I do?" she asked quietly.

Gabriel sighed deeply and knelt down beside her, his wings folding gracefully behind him. "We must find a way to undo this bond before it causes any harm."
I chuckled darkly. "Good luck with that. The binding ritual is permanent."
Gabriel's jaw tightened as he stood back up to face me. "Then we will have to find another way to protect her."
Elara looked up at both of us with a mixture of fear and determination in her eyes. "Can't you both protect me?"
The room fell silent for a moment as we considered her words.
Gabriel finally spoke, his voice softer but still firm. "For now, we will work together to keep you safe."
I nodded slowly, though my smirk never left my face. "An uneasy truce it is then."
Elara let out a small breath of relief and smiled up at us both.
But just as we began to settle into this fragile alliance, the ground beneath us shook violently.
Elara screamed as cracks began to form in the floor.
Gabriel's wings flared out protectively around her while I scanned the room for the source of the disturbance.
"Something's coming," I growled.
And then the floor gave way beneath us.
