I stood in front of the team, looking at each of their faces.
They were all so young.
So much younger than I was used to seeing them.
I shook my head, trying to clear it.
This wasn’t the time to be thinking about that.
We had a job to do, and we needed to do it right.
"Alright, everyone," I said, my voice loud and clear.
"We all know what we’re here to do."
I looked at the device in front of me.
It was a large, metal ring that was standing up on its side.
It was about seven feet tall and three feet wide.
There were lights flashing on the inside of it, and I could hear the hum of electricity as it ran through the coils inside the ring.
The ring was connected to a large computer by a series of cables that ran from the base of the ring into the back of the computer.
The computer was sitting on a table in front of me, and there were several screens attached to it that were displaying various readouts and graphs.

Derek Morgan stood to my right, his muscles taut with anticipation.
He cracked his knuckles and gave me a nod.
"Ready when you are, Hotch," he said, his voice steady.
Emily Prentiss was on my left, adjusting her earpiece.
Her eyes were sharp, focused, and ready for anything.
She glanced at the device and then back at me.
"Let's get this done," she said, her tone leaving no room for doubt.
JJ was behind the computer screens, her fingers flying over the keyboard.
She was making sure our connection to the present remained stable.
"All systems are go," she reported, not taking her eyes off the monitors.
I took a deep breath and stepped closer to the device.
My hand hovered over the activation switch for a moment before I pressed it.
The ring began to glow, and a low hum filled the room.
The lights inside the ring started to spin faster and faster until they became a blur of colors.
A portal shimmered into existence within the ring.
It looked like a rippling pool of water suspended in mid-air.
I turned back to the team one last time.

"This is it," I said. "Stay close, and remember why we're here. We have to find and protect teenage Spencer Reid from the unsub."
With that, I stepped through the portal.
The sensation was disorienting, like being pulled through a tunnel at high speed.
When I emerged on the other side, I stumbled slightly but quickly regained my balance.
The air was different here—thicker somehow, with a hint of something metallic.
We were in 1996.
I looked around and saw that we had landed in an alleyway behind what appeared to be an old bookstore.
Derek and Emily stepped through next, followed by JJ.
We regrouped quickly, scanning our surroundings for any immediate threats.
"Where do we start?" Emily asked, her eyes darting around the alley.
I pulled out a map of Las Vegas from my pocket and unfolded it.
"We know Spencer's high school is about two miles from here," I said. "We'll head there first. He should be in class right now."
We moved out of the alley and onto the street, trying to blend in as much as possible.
The city looked different—less developed than I remembered—but there was no time to dwell on that.

As we approached the school, I could feel the tension building within me.
We had one chance to get this right.
We reached the front entrance of the school and slipped inside unnoticed.
The hallways were bustling with students moving between classes.
JJ tapped into her earpiece. "I've hacked into the school's system. Spencer's in Room 204—History class."
We made our way up to the second floor, keeping our heads down to avoid drawing attention.
When we reached Room 204, I peered through the small window in the door.
There he was—young Spencer Reid, sitting near the front of the class, scribbling notes furiously.
Just then, a loud crash echoed from down the hallway.
We all turned instinctively toward the sound.
"That can't be good," Derek muttered.
Before we could react further, a figure appeared at the end of the corridor—a tall man with a menacing look in his eyes and something glinting in his hand.
"Get ready," I whispered urgently. "This might be our unsub."
The man started walking towards us with purposeful strides.

The unsub spotted us and bolted down the hallway.
Derek sprinted after him, muscles tense, eyes locked on the target.
Emily followed closely, her focus unwavering.
JJ and I headed towards Room 204, where Spencer was.
We burst into the classroom, causing a few students to gasp in surprise.
Spencer was under a desk, his eyes wide with fear.
"Spencer, it's okay," JJ whispered urgently as she knelt beside him.
I kept watch at the door, heart pounding.
The hallway outside was chaotic; students were peeking out of classrooms, curious about the commotion.
"Hotch, we need to move," JJ said, helping Spencer to his feet.
He looked bewildered but nodded, trusting us implicitly.
We started making our way back down the hallway when I heard a loud crash from behind.
I turned just in time to see Derek tackle the unsub as he reached an exit.
They both went down hard, sliding across the floor.
Emily was right there, her face stern as she pulled out a pair of handcuffs.
She secured them around the unsub's wrists with practiced efficiency.
The immediate threat was neutralized.

"Get him up," I ordered, my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through me.
Derek hauled the unsub to his feet, keeping a firm grip on his arm.
"Who are you?" Spencer asked, his voice trembling slightly as he looked at us with wide eyes.
"We're friends," JJ said gently. "We're here to help you."
I glanced at Derek and Emily. "Let's get out of here before anyone else shows up."
We moved quickly through the hallways, avoiding any further encounters with students or staff.
As we exited the school building, I could feel the tension in my shoulders start to ease slightly.
"Where are we going?" Spencer asked as we made our way down the street.
"Somewhere safe," I replied. "We'll explain everything once we're secure."
We reached a black SUV parked discreetly around the corner. Derek opened the back door and helped Spencer inside. JJ climbed in next to him while Emily took the front passenger seat. I slid into the driver's seat and started the engine.
As we drove away from the school, I glanced at Spencer in the rearview mirror. He looked scared but determined. He had no idea what was happening or why we were there, but he trusted us. That trust was something we couldn't afford to break.

"We're taking you somewhere safe," I repeated. "Just hold on a little longer."
The streets of Las Vegas blurred past us as we sped towards our safe house. The air was thick with tension and anticipation. We had successfully neutralized one threat, but there were still so many unknowns ahead of us.
As we pulled into a quiet neighborhood and approached our safe house, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. We had made it this far without any major incidents. Now it was time to regroup and figure out our next move.
I parked the SUV in front of a modest-looking house with drawn curtains. Derek got out first, scanning the area for any signs of trouble before giving us a nod. We all exited the vehicle and hurried inside.
Once we were safely inside, I turned to face Spencer. "You're probably wondering what's going on," I said.
He nodded slowly, his eyes still wide with confusion and fear.
"We're here to protect you," JJ said softly. "There's someone dangerous after you."
Spencer swallowed hard but didn't say anything. He just looked at each of us in turn, trying to make sense of everything that had happened.
"We'll explain more soon," I promised. "But for now, just know that you're safe with us."
