I was in the middle of a meeting with my team when my phone rang.
And it was a number I hadn’t seen in over a decade.
Top Gun.
The Navy’s premier fighter weapons school.
The place where I’d trained to be a pilot, and then gone on to become one of the best pilots in the world.
I stared at the screen, my heart pounding in my chest.
Why were they calling me?
I hadn’t been back there since I’d left the program, and I’d never had any contact with them since.
I glanced up at the rest of my team, who were all staring at me, waiting for me to answer the call or silence it.
"Excuse me," I said, standing up from the table and walking out of the conference room before they could ask any questions.
I stepped into the hallway, my mind racing.
The phone was still ringing in my hand, and I hesitated for a moment before answering.
"Reid," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Lieutenant Commander Reid," a stern voice on the other end replied. "This is Admiral Thompson. We need you at Top Gun immediately."
My heart skipped a beat. "Admiral Thompson? What’s going on?"
"There’s no time to explain over the phone. Your presence is required urgently. You’ll receive further instructions upon arrival."
"But—"
The line went dead before I could finish my sentence.
I stood there, staring at my phone, feeling a mix of confusion and anxiety.
What could possibly be so urgent that they needed me back at Top Gun after all these years?
I took a deep breath and walked back into the conference room.
JJ and Hotchner were waiting with concerned expressions.
"What’s going on, Reid?" JJ asked, her eyes searching mine for answers.
"It’s... it’s personal," I said, trying to brush it off.
Hotchner narrowed his eyes, clearly sensing that there was more to the story. "Spencer, we’re your team. If something’s wrong, we need to know."
I sighed, knowing I couldn’t keep this from them any longer. "It’s Top Gun. They need me back there immediately."
JJ’s eyes widened in surprise. "Top Gun? As in the Navy fighter school?"
"Yes," I admitted reluctantly. "I used to be a pilot there."
The room fell silent as they processed this revelation.
"You were a pilot?" JJ finally asked, disbelief evident in her voice.
"One of the best," I said quietly. "But that was a long time ago."
Hotchner crossed his arms, his expression unreadable. "Why didn’t you ever tell us?"
"It’s not something I like to talk about," I said, looking down at the floor. "I left that life behind for a reason."
"And now they want you back," JJ said softly.
"Apparently," I replied, feeling the weight of their gazes on me.
Hotchner took a step closer, his tone serious. "Spencer, if they’re calling you back after all these years, it must be important. Are you going to go?"
I looked up at him, my mind racing with questions and doubts. "I don’t know. But I don’t think I have much of a choice."
Before anyone could say anything else, my phone buzzed again with another call.
This time it was an unknown number.
I answered it cautiously. "Reid."
"Lieutenant Commander Reid," the voice on the other end said urgently. "This is Lieutenant Parker from Top Gun Operations. We’ve arranged for immediate transport to get you here as soon as possible."
"I—"
"You need to leave now," Parker interrupted. "We’ll brief you on the situation once you arrive."
The call ended abruptly, leaving me with even more questions than before.
I looked at JJ and Hotchner, their faces mirroring my own confusion and concern.
"I have to go," I said finally, feeling a sense of dread settling in my stomach.
"Be careful," JJ said softly, her eyes full of worry.
Hotchner nodded in agreement. "Keep us updated as much as you can."
"I will," I promised, turning to leave the room.
As I walked out of the building and into the unknown, one thought kept echoing in my mind: What could possibly be so urgent that they needed me back at Top Gun?
