I was a street fighter.
That’s how I made my money.
That’s how I survived.
And now, I was about to die.
I was in the middle of a fight, and I was losing.
Badly.
The guy across from me had at least fifty pounds on me, and he knew how to use it to his advantage.
He’d already broken my nose, and my ribs were on fire.
But I couldn’t give up.
Not yet.
I needed the money too badly.
If I didn’t win this fight, my brother Carlo would be in even deeper with the mob than he already was.
And that was something I couldn’t let happen.
Debt Punch: A Fighter's Redemption
The hulking figure in front of me grinned, his teeth stained with my blood.
He swung again, a massive fist aimed at my head.
I ducked, barely avoiding the blow, but stumbled as my legs threatened to give out.
The crowd around us roared, their faces a blur of excitement and bloodlust.
I could hear my own labored breathing, each inhale a struggle against the pain in my chest.
"Come on, Joey!" someone shouted from the sidelines. "Get up!"
I blinked, trying to clear my vision.
Carlo's face flashed in my mind, his worried eyes pleading with me to win.
I couldn't let him down.
Not now.
Not ever.
Summoning every ounce of strength left in my battered body, I pushed myself upright.
My opponent sneered, clearly thinking he had already won.
Debt Punch: A Fighter's Redemption
He charged at me, his fists like sledgehammers ready to crush me into the pavement.
But I was ready this time.
As he swung, I sidestepped and drove my fist into his gut with all the force I could muster.
He grunted, doubling over in surprise and pain.
The crowd gasped collectively, the sound like a wave crashing over us.
I didn't stop there.
I followed up with a right hook to his jaw, feeling the satisfying crunch of bone beneath my knuckles.
He staggered back, his eyes wide with shock.
This was my chance.
My only chance.
Ignoring the searing pain in my ribs and the blood dripping from my nose, I pressed forward.
Another punch to his midsection, then an uppercut that sent him reeling backward.
Debt Punch: A Fighter's Redemption
The crowd's roar grew louder, a cacophony of cheers and jeers blending into a single deafening noise.
My opponent stumbled but managed to stay on his feet, shaking his head as if to clear it.
He glared at me with pure hatred in his eyes.
"You’re gonna pay for that," he growled through gritted teeth.
I didn’t respond.
There was no time for words.
Only action.
He lunged at me again, slower this time, more cautious.
I dodged his wild swing and landed another punch to his side.
He winced but kept coming.
We traded blows, each hit sending shockwaves of pain through my already battered body.
But I couldn’t stop.
Wouldn’t stop.
For Carlo.
For our future.
With one final burst of energy, I aimed a powerful kick at his knee.
It connected with a sickening crack.
