MIA
She is a fellow camper and new friend for Jessica. She is friendly, confident, and outgoing. Mia quickly becomes part of Jessica's circle at camp, offering support and introducing them to social dynamics. Despite being older, she treats Jessica like a peer and helps her settle in. Mia's presence provides comic relief and grounding for Jessica in the unfamiliar camp environment.
I was working in my office, when I heard a click, and then I felt myself soaring.
The next thing I knew, was that I was not me anymore.
I found myself in a body of a girl, who looked not more than thirteen years old.
She had dark hair, was really not tall, and had some curves, which made her look more sexy than she actually was.
As I tried to figure out what was going on, I heard a voice in my head.
"Hello there," said The Girl.
"Who are you?" I asked her.
"I am you," she replied.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, that I am your spirit."
"You are my spirit? How is that possible?"
"It is possible," said The Girl.
"Right now, you are in the body of Jessica, the daughter of my dad's colleague Jane."
"Why are you talking to me?"
"I am here to help you," said The Girl.
"Help me? What do you mean?"
"I will tell you what to do and when," said The Girl.
"You will be my guide?"
"Yes," said The Girl.
"But how long will I stay in this body?"
"Until the end of the camp," said the Girl.
"Really? I can't wait that long. I have to return to my body."
"When the time comes, you will know," said The Girl.
"Standing in front of my bedroom mirror, I tug at the oversized camp t-shirt that hangs awkwardly on Jessica's developing frame.
The Girl critiques my outfit choices, insisting I change into something more flattering.
I resist, but eventually swap the shirt for a fitted purple top that makes me uncomfortable.
Through the window, I spot the yellow camp bus turning onto our street.
The Girl urges me to check my hair one last time.
My hands shake while adjusting the backpack straps, dreading the moment I'll have to board that bus with other kids my age.
"Why are you so nervous?" The Girl asked, her voice laced with curiosity.
"I haven't been thirteen in decades," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Well, you better get used to it because there's something important you need to learn here," she said, a hint of urgency in her tone.
I grip my backpack tightly as I approach the bus stop.
Clumps of pre-teens and teenagers stand in their cliques, the morning sun casting long shadows across the sidewalk.
Two girls giggle as they show each other something on their phones, while a tall boy tosses a football with his friends, his laughter echoing through the air.
The Girl whispers in my ear, urging me to try talking to someone, but I freeze.
My mind races as I try to remember the social dynamics of this age group, something I haven't had to navigate in decades.
Suddenly, a girl with braces and curly brown hair waves at me.
I recognize her from the camp roster - Mia, Jessica's bunkmate for the week.
I awkwardly wave back, my arm feeling heavy and uncoordinated in this new body.
The Girl nudges me again, telling me to walk over to Mia.
I take a deep breath and walk up to her, my heart pounding in my chest.
She grins at me, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
"So it's this summer that we do it and become real women, not just girls?" she says, her voice filled with anticipation.
I furrow my brow, confused.
The Girl chimes in, "She means sex, Jessica. It's time you learned."
My cheeks flush as I glance around to make sure no one else heard her.
Mia continues talking, oblivious to my internal struggle.
"We'll be away from our parents and we can explore this new territory together. It'll be fun!"
I nod along, still unsure how to respond.
The bus pulls up, and Mia grabs my arm, pulling me toward the open doors.
As we climb the steps, Mia leans in closer.
"Did you bring the list of things we need to try?" she whispers conspiratorially.
I hesitate, then hear The Girl's voice urging, "Tell her you forgot it, but you'll make one tonight."
On the bus ride to camp, I sink into a window seat, and Mia plops down beside me.
She's still buzzing with energy, her eyes shining with excitement.
She pulls out her phone and starts scrolling through TikTok videos.
"Look at this," she says, showing me a video of a group of teen girls talking about their first time at summer camp.
They're all giggling and sharing stories of sneaking out to meet boys in the woods.
The Girl chimes in, "That's not appropriate for your age, Jessica."
I nod in agreement, feeling a little uncomfortable.
Mia continues scrolling through videos, each one more suggestive than the last.
The Girl keeps chiming in with comments about which activities are age-appropriate and which aren't.
My stomach is churning as I try to keep up with Mia's rapid-fire commentary on each video.
Finally, she turns to me and asks, "So what do you think we should put on our list first?"
I pretend to fall asleep against the window, earning a disappointed sigh from Mia.
The Girl's voice echoes in my mind, "You can't avoid this forever."
