I was so stoked when I got the call from the promoter asking me to be on the card for the big show at the Richmond Coliseum.
It was going to be a throwback to the ladies pro wrestling of the 1980s and 1990s, something I’d always loved, and I was beyond honored to be a part of it.
I was a girl next door type looking blonde, more like a sexy nurse or paramedic, which I had been until recently, and I knew I didn’t have the typical look of a pro lady wrestler.
But I also knew I could kick some ass and get the crowd on my side.
I was beyond thrilled when I found out my opponent was going to be none other than dirty blonde full figured funny heel Betty Bass.
She was known for being one of the best heels in all of women’s pro wrestling and this was going to be her last match before she retired.
For my entrance, I knew I had to go all out.
I jumped on EBay and bought one of Desiree’s old blue one piece suits along with her white boots.
I had my hair done platinum blonde just like she used to wear it.
Desiree Ashrafi was one of my idols growing up, along with Wendi Richter, Judy Grable, and Sherri Martel.

I paced back and forth in my apartment, phone in hand, staring at Mason’s number on the screen.
I’d been staring at it for the last ten minutes, trying to work up the nerve to call him.
Finally, I took a deep breath and hit dial.
The phone rang several times before he answered.
"Hey," he said, his voice sounding a little breathless.
"Hey," I replied, suddenly feeling nervous.
"I was just calling to see how you’re doing."
"I’m good," he said.
"Just got done working out. How about you?"
I sat down on my bed, running my fingers over the vintage blue fabric of Desiree’s suit that lay next to me.

"I’m good too," I said.
"I have a match coming up this weekend."
"That’s awesome," he said.
"Who are you fighting?"
"Betty Bass," I replied, grinning from ear to ear.
"No way!" he exclaimed.
"That’s awesome. She’s a legend."
"I know," I said.
"And this is her last match before she retires. I really want to make it special."
"What do you have planned?" he asked. "Well," I said, "I’m going to do a tribute to Desiree Ashrafi. I bought one of her old suits online and had my hair done platinum blonde like hers. I even got a pair of her white boots."
"That sounds amazing," he said.
"I’m sure you’ll knock it out of the park."
"Thanks," I said, feeling a surge of confidence.
"So, what do you know about Betty? Do you think she’ll be willing to put me over?"
Mason laughed.
"Put you over? You’re not going to need any help with that. Betty is a heel through and through. She loves playing the bad girl."
"Yeah, but she’s also known for being one of the best heels in all of women’s pro wrestling," I pointed out.
"She knows how to get the crowd on her side."
"Well, yeah," Mason agreed.
"But she’s also known for being ruthless in the ring. She’ll do whatever it takes to win."

I grabbed a notebook and pen from my nightstand and poised myself to take notes.
"What kind of moves should I look out for?" "Well," Mason said, "her finishing move is the ‘Bass Drop.’ It’s a sit-out facebuster off the top rope."
"Okay, well, I’m going to go over some of her old matches and see if I can pick up any tips," I said.
"That’s a great idea," Mason replied.
"Just be careful. Betty is known for being unpredictable."
"Don’t worry, I’ll be fine," I said, rolling my eyes.
"I’ll talk to you later, okay?"
"Sounds good," he said.
"Good luck with your match."
"Thanks," I replied before hanging up.
I cleared the furniture out of my living room and pushed the couch against the wall.
I rolled up the rug and slid it underneath the couch.

Then I grabbed one of my sturdiest wooden chairs and placed it in the center of the room.
I opened my laptop and pulled up some old footage of Betty’s matches on YouTube.
I set it on the coffee table and climbed up onto the chair, using it as a makeshift top rope.
I watched as Betty climbed up onto the top rope and jumped off, landing a perfect splash on her opponent.
I mimicked her movements, jumping off the chair and landing hard on the hardwood floor.
My knees scraped against the ground as I rolled over, trying to get a feel for how she moved in the ring. After several minutes of practice, I stopped to take a break.
I sat down on the couch and watched more footage of Betty’s matches.
She was so graceful in the ring, moving with ease and precision as she delivered blow after blow to her opponents.
I studied her every move, trying to learn as much as I could about her style.
After another hour of practice, I was starting to feel tired.
My shoulders were aching from all of the falls I had taken, and my knees were sore from landing on them so many times.
But I wasn’t ready to give up yet.
I knew that if I wanted to beat Betty, I needed to be in top shape.
So I kept practicing until my body was screaming at me to stop. Finally, after two hours of non-stop practice, I collapsed onto my bed exhausted.
My tank top was soaked through with sweat, and my muscles were trembling from fatigue.

But even though I was tired, I felt good about what I had accomplished today.
I knew that if I kept working hard like this every day leading up to my match with Betty, then there was no way she could beat me. Just as I was drifting off to sleep, there was a loud pounding on my ceiling from below me in my apartment building.
