I was rummaging through the archives of the Victoria Times, looking for local history when I stumbled upon an article that made my jaw drop.
It was an interview with an elderly woman who claimed that back in the 1970s, a group of friends went into the sewers beneath Victoria to find the origin of the funniest abortion joke ever told.
They never returned.
With my journalistic instincts triggered, I called up Mark Jensen, a local historian and friend of mine.
"Hey Mark, I need your help with something," I said over the phone.
"What's that?"
"I need access to the city's sewer maps. Can you get me that?"
Mark was silent for a moment.
"Emily, what's going on? You know I'm not just some kind of... map thief or something right?"
"I know. It's just that I need them for a story I'm working on. I'll explain later, okay? Just meet me at the coffee shop downtown at 5pm."
I hung up the phone and went back to digging through the archives.
Sewers have always been a place of morbid fascination for me, especially with all the urban legends about people getting lost in them and never being found.
But what really caught my attention was the fact that this woman claimed that a group of friends actually did just that back in the 1970s.
They went into the sewers to find where the 'funniest abortion joke ever told' came from.
