I once knew a door hidden in my ancient tower.
A door that stood behind a tattered tapestry, one that hung from the stone wall and swayed in the breeze like a ghost.
It had been there all my life, yet I had never seen it.
Not until the day I had nothing left to lose.
The door was old, older even than my four-hundred-year-old self.
Carvings of stars and constellations adorned its surface.
Once, those carvings shone bright with a light that dimmed long ago.
Now, only I could see them, for I carried that light within me.
It beat in my chest like a second heart, and sometimes when I heard nothing but the howling wind, I swore I could hear its soft pulse.
I ran my hand over the carvings and felt the weight of centuries settle upon me.
How many years had passed since last someone touched this door?
A hundred?
