I was eight years old the first time I saw the door.
It was a hot summer day, and I was playing in the garden with Lily.
I’d been chasing her around the oak tree for what felt like hours, and I was getting tired.
"Come on, Lily," I called out.

"Let’s play something else."
She stopped running and turned to me, her straight black hair flying around her face.
"Like what?"
I shrugged.
"I don’t know. Let’s go exploring."
Lily frowned.
"Mr. Alden said we’re not supposed to leave the garden."
I rolled my eyes.
"Mr. Alden says a lot of things. But he’s not here right now, is he?"
She hesitated for a moment, then shook her head.
"Then he won’t know. Come on!"
I grabbed her hand and pulled her along behind me as I ran to the back of the garden.
We stopped in front of the old oak tree that grew there, its branches heavy with leaves that rustled in the wind.
I pressed my hand against the rough bark of the oak tree, feeling its ancient strength under my fingers.
Lily stood beside me, her eyes wide with curiosity.
"Do you feel that?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
She nodded, her gaze fixed on the tree.
"It's like it's alive," she said.
I nodded in agreement and then noticed something strange behind the thick roots.
A faint shimmer caught my eye.
"Look at this," I said, pushing aside some leaves to reveal a small, ornate door hidden in the base of the tree.
Lily gasped, taking a step back.

"What is it?" she asked, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and excitement.
"I don't know," I replied, my heart pounding in my chest. "But I think we should find out."
I reached out and touched the door's handle.
It was cold and smooth under my fingers.
"Jamie, we shouldn't," Lily whispered urgently. "What if it's dangerous?"
I hesitated for a moment, but my curiosity got the better of me.
"We'll be fine," I said, trying to sound more confident than I felt. "Just stay close."
With a deep breath, I turned the handle.

The door creaked open slowly, revealing a swirling vortex of colors inside.
My eyes widened in amazement as I stared into the mesmerizing whirlpool of light and shadow.
"This is incredible," I muttered to myself, stepping closer to get a better look.
Suddenly, a strong gust of wind erupted from the vortex, pulling me towards it with an irresistible force.
"Jamie!" Lily screamed, grabbing my hand in a desperate attempt to hold me back.
But it was too late.
