The room was in shambles.
Books lay open on the shelves, some upside down, others with their pages torn out.
There were broken vases, torn papers, and an old desk lamp that had been knocked over, its light flickering as it lay on the floor.
I kicked aside a thick tome that had fallen near the door, careful not to tear any of the yellowed pages.
"Dad, what happened in here?"
I asked.
My grandfather's study was always cluttered with books and various trinkets he'd found interesting, but never like this.
My grandfather's rocking chair was still in the corner, a small ottoman in front of it where he would place his feet as he read.
