The city never sleeps.
At least, not all the way.
By day, Mural City is a bustling metropolis full of people going about their daily business.
There's nothing particularly special about it, save for the vibrant murals that decorate the buildings.
They're bright and cheerful, depicting fantastical scenes of wolves, foxes, birds, and more.
At night, though, the city changes.
The murals come to life.
What was once a static picture is now a window into another world.
Creatures from the paintings spill into the streets, interacting with each other and whatever humans are brave enough to stay out after dark.
Of course, there are those who hunt the creatures of the murals, seeking to capture their power for themselves.
That's where I come in.
Aurora Wolf, detective and cunning hunter of mural creatures.
My office is a small affair in one of the seedier parts of town.
It's not much to look at: a single desk, two chairs, and bookshelves lining the walls filled with ancient tomes bound in black leather.
The only light comes from a single lantern hanging from the ceiling.
I step out into the crisp night air, the city's energy coursing through my veins like a shot of adrenaline.
The streets are alive, pulsing with an otherworldly rhythm that only reveals itself after dark.
I make my way through the crowded alleys, dodging clusters of revelers and curiosity seekers who've come to witness the nightly spectacle.
Luna's enchanting melody grows louder, weaving in and out of the murmur of the crowd, drawing me closer to our rendezvous point.
As I turn a corner, the ancient fox mural comes into view, its vibrant colors glowing like embers in the darkness.
Felix is already there, leaning against the wall with an air of nonchalance that belies his sharp eyes and quick reflexes.
He nods at me as I approach, his gaze flicking to the phone still clutched in my hand.
"All set?" he asks, his voice low and smooth.
I tuck the phone away, my eyes scanning the surrounding rooftops and alleyways for any signs of unwanted attention.
"Let's do this," I say, my voice barely above a whisper.
Felix pushes off from the wall, his movements fluid and silent as we slip into the shadows, our eyes fixed on the mural.
The ancient fox's gaze seems to follow us, its eyes burning with an inner fire that hints at secrets waiting to be unearthed.
Suddenly, a faint rustling noise emanates from within the mural itself, like the whisper of dry leaves or the soft lapping of waves against the shore.
My heart quickens as Felix's hand closes around my wrist, his grip like a vice.
"What's happening?" I breathe, my senses on high alert.
Felix and I inch closer to the mural, our footsteps silent against the cobblestones.
The air crackles with energy as the fox's eyes flicker, casting a dim glow on our faces.
Luna's voice fades into the background, leaving only the rhythmic beating of my heart.
Felix releases my wrist, his eyes narrowing in concentration.
The rustling intensifies, and a shadowy figure begins to materialize from the mural's depths.
We exchange a quick glance, understanding passing between us without words.
As the figure steps forward, I crouch low, ready to spring into action.
Felix raises a hand, signaling me to wait.
The figure solidifies, its features becoming clearer with each passing moment.
It's a woman with porcelain skin and raven-black hair that cascades down her back like a waterfall of night.
Her eyes are an unsettling shade of green, like moss growing on ancient stones.
She regards us with an unblinking gaze, her presence both captivating and unnerving.
The air seems to vibrate with an otherworldly power as she takes a step closer, her movements fluid and ethereal.
Felix's hand remains raised, his fingers splayed in a calming gesture.
I can feel the tension building inside me, my muscles coiled like springs ready to snap.
Suddenly, the woman's eyes flash with an emerald light, and she speaks in a voice that sends shivers down my spine.
"You should not have come here," she says, her words dripping with malice.
Felix takes a step forward, his eyes locked on hers.
"We mean no harm," he says, his voice smooth as silk.
The woman's gaze never wavers, her attention fixed on Felix like a predator sensing prey.
"I will be the judge of that," she says, her voice dripping with venom.
As she raises her hand, the air around us begins to distort and ripple, like the surface of a pond struck by a stone.
I can feel the power building inside her, a maelstrom of energy waiting to be unleashed.
