MidReal Story

Whispers in the Night

Scenario:The wind howled, sending shivers down the spine of a young man walking through the dark streets. The moon was full and bright. The cold September air made him pull his jacket tighter around his body. With each step he took, the wind found it’s way through the sleeves of his jacket. The buzzing of his phone pierced through the silence, bringing him out of his peaceful thoughts. He reached into his pocked and pulled out the device, its screen flashing with an unknown number. With a sigh, he answered the call, anticipating it to be a work emergency.

The wind howled, sending shivers down my spine.
I pulled my jacket a little tighter around my body.
The September night was cold, the moon full and bright.
I was only a few blocks away from home, but I still had time to spare.
I didn’t want to get home too early, mom would think I was up to something.
I wanted to wait until almost ten, that way she wouldn’t question me.
I wanted no questions.
I sighed, pulling my phone out of my pocket.
I dialed Sarah’s number, waiting for her to pick up.
"Hello?"
"Hey, it’s me. I’m going to be a little later than I said."
"Oh, okay. What happened?"
"I got a call from work. I have to go in early tomorrow morning. They said one of the other cashiers called in sick," I lied.
It was becoming too much of a habit to lie to her, but what else could I say?
That I was going to meet some guy I talked to online?
She would flip out, and then lecture me for hours about how dangerous it was.
That I was going to see my secret boyfriend?
She would never believe me, and then she would tell her mom, who would in turn tell mine.
I wasn’t ready for that.
Not yet.
"Okay. Well be careful."
