I was so excited to go back to school after the summer break.
I had just landed a role in a movie, and I was going to be on Broadway in a musical.
I was living my dream, and I couldn’t wait to see what the new school year would bring.
As I walked down the hall with André and Jesse, I saw Jade talking to the principal.
I raised an eyebrow as I watched her gesticulate wildly.
"What is she doing?"
André asked me.
"I have no idea."
I shrugged.
"Hey, Tori," Jade said as she caught up to us.
"Hey, Jade."
I smiled.
"What were you talking to the principal about?"
André asked.
"My little brother Ryan auditioned for Hollywood Arts," Jade said proudly.
"He’s going to be a student here."
"That’s great!"
I said genuinely.
But then I thought about all the stairs at the school, and I wondered how exactly Ryan would get around.
He was disabled, right?

We followed André and Jesse into Sikowitz’s classroom.
Sikowitz was standing at the front of the room bouncing up and down like a kid on Christmas morning.
"Okay, class," he said as we all took our seats.
"I have some very exciting news. Russell Fisher, a very famous drama teacher, is bringing his students to perform Cats here at Hollywood Arts. And guess what else?"
Sikowitz asked us.
"What?"
André asked.
"He’s bringing a famous playwright with him!"
My heart skipped a beat.
A famous playwright?

This was my chance to make an impression.
I had to be in the play.
"Oh my god," Cat said excitedly.
"I love Cats."
"Me too," Beck agreed.
"I know all the words to every song."
"Well, I’m sure you’ll be able to show off your talents when Mr. Fisher gets here," Sikowitz said with a smile.
"Beck, you’re going to play Mistoffelees, and Cat, you’re going to play Jemima."
Cat squealed with delight, but Jade was unusually quiet about Beck being cast in the play.
I glanced over at her, but she just shrugged at me.
"Okay, class," Sikowitz said as he clapped his hands together.
"Now I need volunteers to help with the production. Who wants to volunteer?"
"I'll do it," I said quickly, raising my hand.
"Me too," Jade added, shooting me a competitive glance.
"Great, Tori and Jade, you'll be in charge of the set design," Sikowitz announced, oblivious to the tension between us.

"Okay, class," Sikowitz said after the bell rang.
"Go home and work on your projects. And remember, I’m always here if you need anything."
I gathered my things and followed Jade out of the classroom.
We walked down the hall to the theater and met with Sikowitz to discuss our responsibilities.
"So, you girls are in charge of set design," Sikowitz said as he sat down at a table in front of us.
"Great," Jade said excitedly.
"I have some really good ideas."
"Me too," I agreed.
"Okay, well, let’s hear them."
Sikowitz said as he leaned back in his chair.

I went first.
"Well, I was thinking we could make it look like a junkyard," I said as I pulled out my notebook and began to sketch.
"We could use old cars and broken appliances to create a backdrop. And then we could use some of the students to play the parts of the cats."
"That sounds like a lot of work," Sikowitz said as he looked at my drawing.
"Yeah, but it would be worth it," I said confidently.
Jade cleared her throat and stood up.
"I have an idea too," she said as she pulled out her own notebook.
"We could make it look like a dark alleyway. We could use chain-link fences and neon lights to create a dark and moody atmosphere. And then we could use some of the students to play the parts of the cats." "I like that idea too," Sikowitz said as he looked at Jade’s drawing.
"Okay, so you girls can work together on this project. But remember, you’re both in charge, so you’ll have to compromise on some things."
"Great," Jade said as she sat back down.
"I can’t wait to get started."
"Me too," I agreed as I put my notebook away.
Sikowitz smiled at us and stood up.
"Okay, girls. You can go now. Good luck with your project."
We left the theater and walked down the hall together.
Jade was quiet for a while, but then she spoke up.
"So, what do you think about working together?"
"It’s okay, I guess," I said as I shrugged my shoulders.
"I mean, we don’t really have a choice."
"Yeah, but it could be fun," Jade said as she smiled at me.
