I was Samuel’s best student.
I learned everything I knew from him.
I was trained to be a vampire hunter just like him.
My parents were killed by a vampire when I was just a kid.
That was the reason I wanted to become a vampire hunter in the first place.
I wanted to avenge their death.
I already killed my first vampire last week.
It wasn’t easy, though.
It was hard.
The fight lasted for hours until I finally killed him with Samuel’s help.
After I killed him, I felt strange.
I didn’t know how to describe it, but it was like I could feel his blood inside me.
I didn’t tell Samuel about it because I thought it was normal.
Maybe it happened to him, too, when he killed his first vampire.
He didn’t tell me about it, so I thought maybe it was one of those things that you had to experience for yourself.
I didn’t want to talk about it until I was sure that it wasn’t normal.
After I killed that vampire, I started to notice that my senses became sharper, especially my hearing and smell.
I could hear everything that happened around me, even the smallest sound, and I could smell every single thing that was near me.
Vampires Among Us
I push through the heavy doors of the city morgue, my enhanced senses immediately picking up the sharp smell of formaldehyde and decay.
The fluorescent lights flicker overhead, casting an eerie glow over the sterile environment.
My boots squeak against the polished floor as I make my way to the front desk, where a nurse in blue scrubs sits hunched over a stack of files.
I clear my throat to get her attention, and she looks up, her eyes widening slightly at my appearance.
I probably still have dark circles under my eyes from last night’s hunt.
Vampires Among Us
"Can I help you?" she asks warily, her fingers tightening on her pen.
"I’m looking for information about a body that was brought in last night," I reply, keeping my voice low and even.
"A female vampire."
The nurse’s eyes flicker with recognition, but she quickly masks it with a neutral expression.
"I’ll see what I can find," she says, leaning forward to type on her computer.
Her fingers dance across the keyboard, and her eyes dart nervously between the screen and me.
The chemical stench of the morgue grows stronger, making my nose twitch.
Through the walls, I can hear the hum of refrigeration units and the soft squeak of wheels on linoleum - someone pushing a gurney down a distant hall.
The nurse stands, smoothing her scrubs with a nervous gesture.
Vampires Among Us
"Follow me," she whispers, her voice trembling slightly.
She swipes her keycard at a heavy metal door marked "Authorized Personnel Only."
The lock clicks open with a metallic thunk.
She leads me down a long, sterile hallway lined with closed doors.
Her shoes click against the linoleum floor, echoing off the walls.
My enhanced hearing picks up a second set of footsteps echoing from somewhere ahead, though I can’t pinpoint the location.
The fluorescent lights flicker overhead, casting shifting shadows that my sharpened eyes track instinctively.
The air is thick with antiseptic and the faint tang of fresh blood.
Vampires Among Us
As we pass a storage closet, I catch a whiff of something metallic and sweet - the scent of blood-soaked gauze.
The nurse stops abruptly at another heavy metal door, her hand trembling as she reaches for another keycard.
I step closer, my enhanced hearing picking up the rapid beat of her heart.
The fluorescent lights cast harsh shadows across her face as she turns to me, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Her name was Sarah Mitchell," she says, glancing nervously down the corridor.
"She was brought in three nights ago."
The nurse’s fingers grip the keycard tighter, and I notice dark bruises on her wrist, partially hidden by the sleeve of her scrubs.
Vampires Among Us
Before I can ask about the marks, the lock beeps, and she quickly pushes the door open.
I step into the cold room, my enhanced vision adjusting instantly to the dim lighting.
Metal tables line the walls, their surfaces cluttered with unfamiliar medical instruments that gleam dully in the low light.
The nurse flips on a single overhead light, casting harsh shadows across the stainless steel cabinets and specimen jars lining the shelves.
In the center of the room lies a single body, covered with a white sheet.
My heightened hearing picks up the rapid beat of the nurse’s heart and another sound - a low scratching noise coming from one of the closed storage drawers.
Vampires Among Us
"Did you hear that?" I ask, my voice low but urgent.
The nurse nods, her eyes wide with fear. "It's been happening ever since Sarah arrived," she whispers, her voice barely audible over the persistent scratching.
I nod at the nurse, noticing how her shoulders slump with visible relief when I dismiss her.
"Thank you, nurse. I got it from here now," I say firmly, keeping my tone professional despite the scratching sounds growing louder.
She backs away quickly, keycard clutched to her chest, and practically runs down the hallway.
Her footsteps fade as I turn to face the covered body.
The sheet is pristine white under the single light, but my enhanced vision catches subtle movement underneath - a finger twitch or maybe just shadows playing tricks.
Vampires Among Us
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what I might find.
"Sarah," I call softly, unsure if I'm expecting a response.
The scratching stops abruptly, and a faint voice whispers back, "Help me."
I slowly pull back the white sheet, and the body of a young woman comes into view.
Her skin is deathly pale, almost translucent in the dim light of the room.
Her eyes remain closed, but with my enhanced vision, I can see the subtle rise and fall of her chest - she's breathing, though it's almost imperceptible.
The scratching noise has stopped completely, and an unsettling silence fills the room.
I kneel beside her, using my hunter training to examine her body methodically for any signs of how she "died" or if she's truly a vampire.
Two small puncture marks on her neck catch my attention first, likely from a vampire bite.
Her arms are bruised and scratched, possibly from trying to defend herself against her attacker.
I gently lift one of her hands and notice a small amount of ash under her fingernails - another indication that she fought against a vampire.
The room feels heavy with anticipation, and I can't shake the feeling that something is waiting for me to make my next move. Leaning closer to examine the bite marks more closely, I notice that they are fresh but not bleeding - a sign that whatever bit her has already fed and isn't interested in her blood anymore.
As I lean closer to check her teeth for fangs, I hear a faint sound behind me - the scratching has started again.
Vampires Among Us
My heart races as I realize whatever is making that noise might be closer than I think.
I turn swiftly, ready to confront the unseen threat lurking in the shadows.
I whirl around to find a tall woman standing by the storage drawers, her pale skin almost luminescent under the harsh morgue lights.
She's in her forties, with long black hair and piercing green eyes that seem to hold centuries of secrets.
Her long black dress appears out of place in this sterile environment, and its flowing hem brushes against the tile floor as she moves closer.
"You're quite observant for a young hunter," she says, her voice carrying an authority that commands attention.
"Sarah was one of mine before she got... careless."
She takes another step forward, her heels clicking against the tile floor.
I grip my stake tighter, ready for any unexpected move.
"Sarah broke our coven's rules," she continues, her voice dripping with a mix of disappointment and disdain.
"She hunted too openly, too recklessly. We can't afford to draw attention to ourselves, not now."
The woman's red-painted lips curl into a cruel smile.
Vampires Among Us
"So, we had to teach her a lesson."
My enhanced senses pick up no heartbeat from her, confirming what I already suspected - she's a vampire.
