A week before college
It was hard to believe that I would be leaving home and going to college.
I was half-expecting my father to walk into my room and tell me that the college I applied for just changed its mind and decided not to accept me.
But that didn’t happen.
Instead, I found myself staring at the moving boxes inside my room.
It was a mix of emotions I was feeling— a bit of anxiety, a bit of excitement, and sadness.
I was grateful for everything my parents did for me, but it would be hard to leave home and live my own life.
I zipped my last suitcase, and as I looked at my room, I was filled with nostalgia.
“Don’t worry, sweetheart,” my father said behind me.
“I promise you’ll visit us during the breaks.”
I gave him a small smile.
“I know, Dad.” He wouldn’t let me stay in the dorms for the entire semester.
My father was a loving man who worked his way up from being a janitor to being a businessman.
He had no formal education and yet he managed to build an empire.
He had his own way of thinking and his own way of managing things.
But what I admired most about him was how he treated my mother like a queen.
He might not be as vocal as other fathers, but he showed his love through actions, and that was enough for us.
He walked into my room and stared at my packed stuff.
“Did you forget anything?”
I shook my head and hugged him tight.
“I love you, Dad.”
He wrapped his arms around me, giving me a gentle squeeze.
“I love you more, sweetheart.”
A couple of days later, we packed our things, and as soon as we were ready to go, we went down and placed everything in the car.
My father carried one of the boxes, and he didn’t miss the chance to remind me once again.
“Don’t forget to eat healthy food.”
I chuckled and nodded at him.
When we arrived at the dorms, we all went down and grabbed my things from the trunk.
My roommate wasn’t there yet, so we went straight to my room and placed everything inside.
Once I was settled in, I hugged my father and Alice tight.
I blinked back the tears that threatened to fall down, and I tried to hide it from them.
“Don’t worry about me,” I said despite the lump in my throat.
Alice squeezed me tighter and smiled at me.
“I know you’d do great in college.”
I nodded and gave her a small smile before they left me in the dorm alone.
Alice was like a burst of color in my life.
She was always happy and excited about things— a stark contrast to me who was an introvert by nature and a bit shy around people I just met for the first time.
Even if we were different in many ways, we managed to become best friends since we were kids.
We met when I was four years old and she was five years old.
While I was playing with my dolls on our front yard, she rode her bike near our house and saw me sitting alone under the tree.
