I was hiding behind my easel, staring at the canvas in front of me and trying to get my lines to look right.
My friends were having a party in my art studio, celebrating the one-year anniversary of my business, and I was stuck in the back, working on a piece for a client who was coming to pick it up that night.
"Jamie, what are you doing back there?"
One of my best friends, Mia Chen, came around the side of the easel, holding a glass of what I was pretty sure was sangria.
She had long brown hair pulled back into a ponytail and was wearing a bright yellow sundress that looked amazing against her brown skin.
She was one of the most caring people I knew, always putting others first as a social worker at a local nonprofit.
"I’m working."
I gestured to the canvas.
I dipped my brush into the paint, ignoring Mia's gentle insistence to join the party.
The strokes on the canvas were deliberate, each line a step closer to completion.
Mia lingered, sipping her sangria, watching me with a mix of concern and curiosity.
"You know, Lucas was asking about you," she mentioned casually, trying to draw me out.
I nodded absently, eyes fixed on the painting.
The chatter and laughter from the party seemed distant, muffled by my concentration.
Mia sighed softly and left me to my work.
I added the final touches to the piece, stepping back to assess it critically.
The colors seemed to pop against the white background, and I felt a sense of satisfaction wash over me.
As I turned to clean my brushes, I caught a glimpse of Lucas himself walking towards me, a charming smile spreading across his face.
"Hey, Jamie," he said, his deep voice carrying above the music.
I felt a flutter in my chest, but pushed it aside, focusing on the task at hand.
"Hey," I replied, trying to sound nonchalant.
Lucas leaned against the nearby table, his eyes roving over the painting.
"It's incredible," he said, his gaze lingering on the bold strokes.
I shrugged, feeling a blush rise to my cheeks.
"Thanks."
Suddenly, the music stopped, and the room fell silent.
I looked up to see one of my friends, Rachel, standing on a chair, a microphone in hand.
"Okay, everyone!" she shouted. "It's time for the main event!"
The room erupted into cheers and applause as Rachel announced a surprise performance by a local band.
I rolled my eyes good-naturedly, but before I could react further, Lucas grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the crowd.
"Come on," he said, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Let's get closer."
I hesitated for a moment, then let him lead me into the throng, feeling the pulse of the music in my veins.
