I was never a boy boy.
I didn’t play sports or climb trees.
I didn’t get dirty or roughhouse with the other kids.
I was a slender, sensitive, emotional boy who loved playing with dolls and wearing pretty clothes.
My best friend, Mia Chen, was a tomboy, though.
She wore baseball caps and sneakers, had colorful hair extensions in her braids, and played sports.
Despite our differences, we were inseparable from the time we were in kindergarten.
In eighth grade, I told Mia that I thought I might be gay.
She said she already knew.
In high school, I came out to my friends and family.
Lucas Greene was on the football team.
He had a 65" waist and 20" biceps.
His hair was short and dark, always perfectly messy in a way that made him look like he just rolled out of bed and headed to practice.
He was one of the most popular guys in school.
I was one of the least.
I hung out with Mia and a few other misfits from the drama department.
We performed in plays and musicals, worked on set design and lighting, and made our own costumes.
