The sun beat down on me as I crawled through the narrow, winding tunnel.
I’d been excavating this site in northern Greece for the past six weeks, and we’d finally reached the bottom of the trench.
Now we were going to see what was inside the burial chamber.
"Almost there," I called back to my team.
"Keep moving forward."
I ducked my head to avoid hitting it on the low ceiling.
The tunnel was only about three feet high, so I had to crawl on my belly.
Dirt and rocks moved beneath me, sliding down into the trench behind us.
Marcus and Sophia followed close behind, their voices murmuring as they talked about something.
I couldn’t hear exactly what they were saying, but it sounded like they were arguing.
Marcus was a historian specializing in ancient Greece, and Sophia was an expert in mythology and folklore.
They often disagreed about the meaning of something we’d found, or what life would have been like in ancient times.
Marcus was meticulous and analytical, which made him skeptical of anything that didn’t fit with his view of the world.
Sophia was more imaginative and open to possibilities.
She saw magic and wonder in everything we discovered, even if it didn’t make sense according to historical records.
