Cody Luna and Jesse were the best of friends who worked at a middle school. Cody was an art teacher, Jesse was a gym teacher, and Luna was the school nurse, but there was one thing Luna didn't know about her friends: they both had a crush on her.
"Hey, man. How’s it going?"
Jesse asked as he dropped onto the bench next to me in the staff room.
I looked up from the sandwich I was unpacking.
"Uh, you know. Going well."
I smiled.
We sat in silence for a minute as we both started on our lunches.
The staff room at the middle school where we worked wasn’t large, but there were only a few other people in here at the same time as us, so it felt relatively quiet.
"Hey, have you talked to Luna about that boy?"
Jesse asked after a minute.
I shook my head.
"No. Have you?"
"Nah. I haven’t seen her yet today. What’s his name again?"
"Chris. He came in to see Luna yesterday about a rash on his arm."
Jesse nodded.
"Yeah. I remember. I was talking to him about … something. I can’t even remember what it was now."
Jesse laughed.
"Anyway. He seemed cool. I like how he’s into sports."
I hummed.
"Yeah. He does seem like a good kid."
Jesse stood and went over to the counter.
"Hey, do you want any of this coffee? It’s still pretty fresh."
I shook my head as he poured some into a mug.
"Thanks anyway."
Jesse sat back down and started sipping his coffee right away, even though it had to be hot.
He was a gym teacher, so he and I didn’t have many classes at the same time, but we always made sure to sit together in the staff room during our lunch period.
As Jesse sipped his coffee, I hesitated, then asked, "Do you think Luna likes Chris more than just as a student?"
Jesse paused, lowering his mug, his eyebrows raised in a silent question.
"What makes you say that?" he replied, his tone neutral, but his eyes sparkling with curiosity.
I shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant, but my heart raced slightly at the prospect of uncovering a secret.
"Just a feeling," I said, attempting to downplay my concern. "She seems extra attentive when he's around."
Jesse chuckled, shaking his head, and the sound echoed through the quiet staff room.
"You're overthinking it, Cody," he said, his voice dripping with amusement. "Luna's just doing her job."
I nodded, trying to accept his explanation, but the thought lingered in my mind like an itch I couldn't scratch.
We continued eating in silence, the question hanging between us like an unspoken challenge.
The only sounds were the clinking of utensils against plates and the occasional murmur from the other staff members in the room.
Jesse finished his coffee and stood up, his chair scraping against the floor.
"Let's catch up with Luna later," he suggested, heading out of the staff room.
I followed him, my eyes fixed on the back of his head as we walked down the hallway.
The fluorescent lights above flickered, casting an eerie glow over the empty lockers and classrooms.
We turned a corner, and Luna's office came into view.
The door was open, and she was sitting at her desk, typing away on her computer.
Jesse pushed open the door, and I followed him in, my heart pounding in anticipation.
"Hey, Luna," Jesse said, dropping into one of the chairs in front of her desk.
Luna looked up, a warm smile spreading across her face.
"Hey, guys. What brings you here?"
I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could say anything, Chris walked into the office, a look of concern etched on his face.
"Hey, Nurse Luna. I was wondering if I could ask you something about my rash..."
Luna's eyes flicked to mine, and for a brief moment, I saw something there that made my doubts resurface.
I lingered near Luna's desk as Chris left, my curiosity gnawing at me.
Jesse leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, watching with a smirk.
I cleared my throat, trying to sound casual.
"So, Luna, about Chris," I began, glancing at her as she organized some papers.
She looked up, eyebrows raised in mild surprise.
"Is everything okay with him?" I continued, attempting to mask my real question.
Luna smiled softly, nodding.
"He's just worried about his rash. It's nothing serious."
Her calm demeanor eased my tension slightly, but Jesse's knowing grin kept me on edge.
I shifted awkwardly, unsure of my next move.
The fluorescent lights above hummed softly, casting an artificial glow over the small office.
The scent of disinfectant wafted through the air, mingling with the faint smell of paper and ink from the scattered medical files.
Luna's eyes returned to her work, her fingers moving deftly as she typed on her computer.
I glanced at Jesse, who raised an eyebrow, his expression daring me to push further.
My heart skipped a beat as I took a step closer to Luna's desk.
"So, have you seen any... improvement?" I asked, trying to sound nonchalant despite the growing unease in my chest.
Luna's hands paused mid-type, her gaze flicking up to mine before returning to the screen.
"Not yet," she replied, her voice measured. "But I'm keeping an eye on it."
The air seemed to thicken as Jesse pushed off the doorframe, his eyes locked on mine with an unspoken challenge.
Suddenly, the door burst open, and a harried-looking teacher rushed in.
"We need you in the gym," she panted, urgency in her voice, leaving no room for further questions.
