I became the president.
I was the first person to ever become President of the United States as a joke.
It all started with a mock election at my high school.
The whole thing was supposed to be a big joke, and it was.
I mean, I won by a landslide, but that’s because I ran unopposed.
No one else wanted to be president of the student body, so I didn’t have any competition.
And since I’m not exactly what you’d call "popular," most people thought it would be funny to vote for me as a joke.
Chapter 1
I didn’t really care.
It’s not like I was going to win anyway, so I just went along with it.
We had a little inauguration ceremony in the school gymnasium, where I took the presidential oath and gave a little speech about how I would do my best to make sure our voices were heard and that every student had the opportunity to reach their full potential.
It was all just a big joke until everyone found out that I was actually the president.
That’s when things got weird.
I couldn’t believe it.
I mean, I was only seventeen years old, and I didn’t know anything about politics or how to run a country.
But when I tried to tell everyone that it was all a big misunderstanding, they told me that it was too late.
According to the school handbook, the president of the student body is supposed to be elected by popular vote, but if there are no other candidates, then the person who ran unopposed is automatically declared the winner.
So even though it was all supposed to be just for fun, I had somehow become the president of the United States.
Unexpected Leader: From High School to the White House
I stood on the stage in front of the school gymnasium, staring out at the crowd of students who had gathered to watch me take the presidential oath.
I couldn’t believe this was really happening.
I mean, how did I manage to get myself into this mess?
It all started with a mock election that was supposed to be just for fun.
The idea was that the student council would run a fake campaign to give everyone a chance to participate in the political process and learn about how our government works.
They even had a little election for the positions of president, vice president, and two senators, just like in a real election.
Unexpected Leader: From High School to the White House
At first, it seemed like it was going to be a lot of fun.
Four people signed up for the positions of president and vice president, and two students ran for the senator positions.
But then one of the senator candidates dropped out because he found out he had responsibilities that would prevent him from serving in student government next year.
So that left us with only three candidates: me for president, Emily Torres for vice president, and two other students for the senator positions.
It seemed like the whole thing would be a big joke and that no one would take it too seriously.
After all, we were just a bunch of high school students having a little fun.
