I was going to film a men underwear commercial today and I wasn’t going to use models.
I was going to use real Rugby players during a live game.
And I wasn’t just going to film them wearing the underwear, like in a photoshoot or something.
I was going to film them playing the game, wearing Cheeky Briefs cheeky briefs, with their shorts on top.
And I wasn’t just going to capture them running around, sweating and stuff.
I was going to capture their reaction when their shorts would rip.
Because that’s what I had planned.
And I had rigged their shorts so they would rip at some point during the game.
It wasn’t that uncommon for Rugby players’ shorts to rip during a game, but I wanted to make sure it happened today, so I had rigged the seams of the players I was most interested in with some weak thread.
I didn’t tell anyone about my plan, not even my boss and colleagues, because I didn’t want it to get vetoed.
And I definitely didn’t tell the women who would be refereeing the game.
I wanted their reaction to be as natural as possible, so I didn’t want them to know what was going on until it happened.
I had two colleagues helping me: Tom and Mandy.
Tom brought some extra tape for me, just in case I needed it for any last minute repairs on the camera equipment, but he had no idea what I was really planning to do.
Mandy was going to be my prop.
She was going to pretend to be a sports reporter, and I was going to pretend to be her cameraman.
I positioned myself near the sideline, where I could get a good view of the field, and set up my camera equipment.
The late afternoon sun was casting a perfect light across the field, and I adjusted my telephoto lens so that I could capture the action from a distance.
Tom handed me the tripod and I carefully mounted the camera on it, making sure it was level and secure.
I made some minute adjustments to the lens and then looked through the viewfinder to make sure everything was in focus.
The players were starting to come out onto the field, stretching and warming up before the game started.
I tracked several of them with my camera, paying special attention to those who were wearing the shorts that I had rigged.
Mandy stood next to me, holding a microphone prop and looking like she belonged there.
I noticed the perfect opportunity when one of the players wearing the rigged shorts stepped off the field for a water break.
I gestured to Mandy and whispered something in her ear.
She nodded enthusiastically and then walked over to where the female referee was standing, microphone in hand.
The referee looked surprised but pleased to be interviewed, and I watched as Mandy asked her a few questions about women’s involvement in Rugby.
Meanwhile, I casually walked over to where the player was standing, pretending to check my camera equipment.
The player was still catching his breath from the exertion of the game, and he barely even noticed me as I crouched down next to him, adjusting my tripod.
I quickly reached out and tugged at the loose thread that I had planted earlier, further weakening the already compromised seam. Then I stood up and gave Mandy a subtle thumbs up, signaling that she could wrap up her interview with the referee.
