I was a poor girl, adopted by two wealthy but cruel people.
They didn't really care about me; they just wanted to make it seem as though they had a good image.
I tried to be a good child, but I knew I would never be able to make them happy.
I went to the best school in town, where all the rich kids attended.
It was hard trying to keep up with my schoolwork while also having to work part-time at the bakery to earn some extra money.
I loved sweets and baked goods.
Who wouldn't?
One thing I loved about my job was that I got to sample all of the yummy treats.
Sometimes, I would get so full from eating all of the samples that I wouldn't even be hungry for supper.
The only bad part about my job was having to clean up after all of the messy customers.
Sometimes, I would find old socks, pop bottles, and other weird items on the tables.
One day, while I was cleaning up, a group of kids from my school came in.
They were all wealthy and popular, and they sat in the back corner.
As I was wiping down the tables near them, I heard them talking about me.
"I bet she's never had a boyfriend before. Look at her; she's so nerdy," one of them said.
Underneath The Crown
I grip the damp rag tighter, moving methodically across the sticky surface of table six.
The group's laughter grows louder as Sophie, their ringleader, deliberately knocks her drink onto the freshly cleaned table five.
Dark cola drips onto the floor, forming a puddle around my shoes.
I force myself to breathe steadily, counting each stroke of the cloth against the wood grain.
More snickers follow as I retrieve the mop from behind the counter.
Underneath The Crown
The shop's bell chimes - another customer enters.
I focus on the sticky puddle, methodically pushing the mop back and forth.
The bell above the door chimes again, signaling another departure.
I glimpse an elderly woman entering, her cane tapping against the tile floor.
Sophie whispers something that makes her group burst into fresh giggles, but I keep my eyes down, watching brown liquid swirl into the mop strands.
Once the floor is clean, I wring out the mop, straighten my apron, and walk to the counter where the elderly customer waits.
"Welcome to Sweet Dreams Bakery," I say, my voice steady despite the continued murmuring from Sophie's corner.
The elderly woman peers at the display case through thick glasses, her hand leaning heavily on the wooden cane.
While I wait patiently, Sophie's group continues their hushed commentary, punctuated by snickers.
The woman points a shaky finger at various pastries, asking detailed questions about ingredients and freshness.
I answer each query thoroughly, grateful for the distraction from my tormentors.
Finally, she selects a blueberry scone.
Underneath The Crown
Her weathered hand trembles slightly as she counts out exact change from her coin purse.
As I hand her the scone, she looks up at me with a knowing smile.
"Don't let them get to you, dear," she says softly, her eyes twinkling with unexpected warmth.
I blink, surprised by her perceptiveness, and nod, feeling a strange sense of comfort from her words.
After the elderly woman exits, I wipe down the display case one final time.
Sophie's group begins to gather their belongings, casting me one last disdainful glance before leaving the shop.
In the back room, I change out of my flour-dusted uniform and clock out.
My shoulders feel tense from holding back emotions all shift.
The walk home stretches longer than usual, the street lights flickering on as cars rush past in the early evening traffic.
Underneath The Crown
Inside my adoptive parents' pristine house, I slip upstairs without dinner, not wanting to face their criticism today.
I close my bedroom door, finally allowing myself a moment of solitude and release.
