I was assigned a critical mission.
The target was a man who had been on the run for years, and he was finally caught.
My job was to get close to him and extract the information we needed.
The only problem?
He had a daughter, and she was my best friend.
I had to choose between my job and my friendship.
And I chose the latter.
I still remember the day I met her.
She was sitting in the corner of the room, reading a book, while everyone else was playing outside.
I walked up to her and asked her why she wasn't playing with the other kids.
She looked up at me with her big brown eyes and said, "I don't like them."
From that day on, we were inseparable.
We did everything together, from studying to playing sports.
She was smart, funny, and beautiful, and I knew that one day she would make a great spy.
It had been over five years since I last heard from him.
I knew he was on a mission, but I didn't expect him to go dark like this.
We were supposed to be best friends, but he never told me where he was going or when he'd be back.
I missed him so much, and I was starting to worry that something had happened to him.
But then, out of the blue, I got a message from him.
It was short and to the point, telling me to meet him at our old safe house in London's East End.
We hadn't used that place in years, not since we were rookies in the service.
I knew something was wrong, but I didn't hesitate.
I had to see him, and find out what happened.
So I packed my bags and headed over there.
When I arrived, I expected to see him waiting for me outside, but he wasn't there.
Instead, a young woman emerged from the shadows of the alleyway.
She had long, brown hair and intelligent green eyes.
She looked familiar, but I couldn't quite place her.
"James," she said, her voice calm and composed.
"It's good to see you again."
I racked my brain trying to figure out who she was, but I came up empty.
"Do I know you?" I asked, trying not to sound rude.
She smiled and walked over to me.
"It's me," she said.
"Sarah." It took a moment for her words to sink in, but when they did, my heart skipped a beat.
There was no way this girl standing in front of me was Sarah Jennings.
The last time I saw her, she was just a kid.
But now she was all grown up, with sharp features and a sleek appearance.
She looked exactly like her father did when he was her age, and there was no mistaking it: She was a Jennings through and through.
"It's been a while," she said, her smile fading slightly.
"Five years," I replied, still trying to wrap my head around how much she'd changed.
"How have you been?"
"I've been okay," she said, her voice unsteady.
"I've been working for the agency for the past few years."
"Really?" I said, a little surprised that she'd followed in her father's footsteps so quickly.
"But what are you doing here?"
She took a deep breath and looked me in the eye.
"I came to find you because my father's gone dark."
I felt a lump form in my throat as her words hit me like a ton of bricks.
"What do you mean he's gone dark?"I asked, even though I already knew the answer.
"He's on a mission," she said, her voice shaking with emotion.
"He's been after this guy for years, but he's always managed to slip through our fingers." She paused for a moment and took another deep breath before continuing.
"My father thinks he can finally get him this time, but our government says he's too dangerous and too well protected to go after."
My blood ran cold as the pieces of the puzzle started to fall into place.
I knew who she was talking about now, and it made sense why he would go dark for him.
