**Chapter 1: The Choice on a Stormy Night**
On a stormy night, I received an anonymous email while working overtime.
Attached was a surveillance video showing an unfamiliar young woman standing at the entrance of an apartment building.
The young woman pointed the camera upwards, capturing the penthouse on the fourth floor of the building.
After a few seconds, a digital clock popped up in the top corner of the screen: 2025.03.08 23:59.
The email caption read: "Outside your apartment building, your birthday."
The video lasted only ten seconds.
I played it three times and couldn’t quite understand what the anonymous sender was trying to convey.
The penthouse on the fourth floor was indeed my apartment, but I didn't recognize the young woman in the video.
What’s more, today was indeed my birthday—the digital clock displayed 11:59 PM, one minute before midnight, and March 8th was my birthday.
But what did this have to do with me?
Just as I was about to delete the email, an image suddenly popped up—a portrait of Chen Wei, the intern who was dismissed three years ago for sexual harassment.
Below the portrait were four words: "She’s outside."
I lifted my head in surprise and looked out the window—the storm had intensified, with heavy rain hitting the glass like a cat scratching a wall.
I stood frozen at my desk, my heart pounding in my chest.
I couldn’t help but think of the anonymous email.
Was Chen Wei really downstairs?
The rain grew stronger, drumming against the window like a snare drum.
Each drop of water seemed to be pounding against my eardrum, making me feel anxious and uneasy.
I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down, telling myself it was just an empty threat.
After all, Chen Wei had been gone for three years.
But as I looked out the window, the sound of the rain grew louder and more intense, like a stormy night three years ago.
It was then that Chen Wei disappeared without a trace after being dismissed from her internship.
I shivered as I recalled that night.
The stormy night that changed everything.
I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off, and I felt compelled to verify whether Chen Wei was really downstairs. I quickly grabbed my belongings and rushed to the elevator.
As I waited for the elevator to arrive, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease wash over me.
The heavy rain outside seemed to be pressing down on me, like a weight on my shoulders.
I felt like I was suffocating under the pressure of the unknown.
Finally, the elevator arrived, and I stepped inside with a sense of relief.
As the doors closed behind me, I felt like I was finally able to breathe again.
But as the elevator began its descent from the 20th floor to the lobby, my anxiety only grew.
What if Chen Wei really was downstairs?
What would she want?
I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was about to go terribly wrong. The elevator seemed to be taking an eternity to reach the lobby, and with each passing second, my anxiety grew more intense.
I felt like I was trapped in a nightmare that I couldn’t wake up from.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the elevator doors opened to reveal a dimly lit lobby.
The heavy rain outside cast long shadows across the floor, making it difficult to see very far ahead.
But as I looked through the glass entrance doors, I saw a figure standing motionless in front of them.
The figure was shrouded in darkness, making it impossible for me to make out any defining features.
A flash of lightning illuminated the sky outside, casting an eerie glow over everything.
I pushed through the glass doors and stepped out into the rain.
My shoes splashed in the puddles on the ground as I approached the dark figure.
The streetlight above us flickered, casting an eerie light over the scene.
For a brief moment, it illuminated the figure in front of me—a woman in a black raincoat, her back turned to me.
Water streamed down her hood as she stood perfectly still, seemingly unaffected by the downpour.
I took another step forward, my throat tightening with unease.
The woman’s slight frame and posture were eerily familiar—just like Chen Wei’s.
I reached out a hand, but before I could touch her, she began to slowly turn around.
Raindrops caught the faint light, glistening like tears on her face.
Her eyes met mine, and I realized it was not Chen Wei.
The woman’s face was unfamiliar, yet hauntingly beautiful.
Her skin was pale and smooth, almost translucent in the dim light.
Her features were sharp and delicate, with a small mole beneath her left eye that looked like a teardrop.
She didn’t say a word, but instead studied me with an intensity that made my skin crawl.
I took another step forward, my shoes squelching in the rain-soaked ground.
The woman remained still, her gaze fixed on mine.
I could feel the weight of her stare like a physical force, making it hard to breathe.
Suddenly, she reached into her right hand pocket and pulled out a small notebook.
It was worn and battered, with a familiar leather cover that seemed to glow in the dim light.
My heart skipped a beat as I realized it was the same type of notebook Chen Wei had used. The woman held the notebook out towards me, her eyes never leaving mine.
I hesitated for a moment before reaching out to take it from her hand.
But just as our fingers touched, she backed away quickly, her movements fluid and practiced like a dancer.
The notebook slipped from my grasp and fell to the ground with a splash.
I lunged forward to grab it, but before I could touch it, the woman turned and disappeared into the darkness of the night.
I picked up the notebook, my hands trembling as I opened it to the first page.
Scrawled in familiar handwriting were the words: "You never knew the truth."
A voice from behind startled me—deep and calm, yet filled with urgency: "She was trying to warn you."
I looked around, but there was no one in sight.
The only sound was the rain pounding against the pavement, creating a rhythmic melody that seemed to echo the beat of my racing heart.
I stood there for a moment, trying to make sense of what had just happened.
The words in the notebook seemed to be etched into my mind, haunting me like a ghost.
I turned and walked back towards the building, my footsteps echoing off the walls.
The rain continued to fall, casting a misty veil over everything.
As I reached the entrance, I glanced back over my shoulder, half-expecting to see the woman standing there again.
But she was gone, vanished into thin air like a phantom.
I stepped inside and closed the door behind me, feeling a sense of unease wash over me. The notebook felt heavy in my hand, like a burden that I couldn’t shake.
I walked back to my office, lost in thought.
The words "You never knew the truth" kept echoing in my mind, haunting me like a ghost.
As I sat at my desk, staring blankly at the wall, I heard a faint noise coming from outside my office door.
At first, I thought it was just the wind or the sound of raindrops falling on the roof.
But then I heard it again—a faint scratching noise that seemed to be coming from right outside my door.
I froze, unsure of what to do next.
The scratching grew louder and more insistent, like someone was trying to claw their way through the door.
My heart raced as I slowly got up from my chair and approached the door. The scratching stopped as soon as I reached for the doorknob.
I hesitated for a moment before opening it slowly.
A gust of wind blew in from the hallway, carrying with it a faint scent of rain and dampness.
I peered out into the darkness, trying to see who or what could have been making that noise.
But there was nothing there—no one in sight.
Just an empty hallway stretching out into darkness.
I closed the door slowly and returned to my desk, feeling a sense of unease settle over me once again.
The notebook still sat on my desk, its worn cover seeming to stare at me accusingly.
I tried to focus on my work, but my mind kept wandering back to those words: "You never knew the truth."
What did they mean?
And who was that woman? As I sat there lost in thought, I heard footsteps coming from outside my office door again.
This time, they were louder and more deliberate, like someone was trying to make sure I heard them.
I looked up from my desk, feeling a mix of fear and anticipation.
The doorknob turned slowly, and the door creaked open.
A figure stood in the doorway, their face obscured by the shadows.
My heart raced as I tried to make out who it was.
But before I could get a good look, the figure turned and disappeared back into the darkness of the hallway.
I sat there for a moment, frozen in shock.
Then, I slowly got up from my desk and approached the door again.
I peered out into the hallway, but there was no one in sight.
The only sound was the wind howling through the empty corridor. I closed the door slowly, feeling a sense of unease wash over me once again.
The notebook still sat on my desk, its worn cover seeming to stare at me accusingly.
I tried to focus on my work, but my mind kept wandering back to those words: "You never knew the truth."

As I sat there lost in thought, I heard footsteps coming from outside my office door again.
This time, they were loud and deliberate, like someone was trying to make sure I heard them.
I looked up from my desk and saw a man standing in the doorway.
He was tall and imposing, his face obscured by shadows.
I froze in fear as he began to speak in a deep and menacing voice. "You never knew the truth," he said slowly.
"I never knew you were watching me."
His words sent chills down my spine as he took a step closer to me.
My heart raced with fear as he continued to speak in that menacing voice.
"I never knew you were hiding something from me."
Suddenly, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small notebook.
It was worn and battered, just like the one Chen Wei had given me earlier.
He held it out towards me, his eyes gleaming with an intensity that made me feel uneasy.
"Read it," he said slowly.
"And then you'll understand."
I hesitated for a moment before reaching out to take the notebook from him.
As soon as my fingers touched it, he turned and disappeared back into the darkness of the hallway. I sat there for a moment, staring at the notebook in my hand.
It felt heavy with secrets and mysteries that I couldn't begin to comprehend.
