When the undead outbreak occurred, I was still living in the palace.
At that time, I had helped the imperial concubine Lin Huang run to the hidden rooms in the palace and hide.
I did not expect that even hiding in the hidden rooms would not be safe, and we were forced to jump into the sewer to survive.
Luckily, we befriended an undead who was once a captain; otherwise, it would be impossible for us to get out of the sewer alive.
The undead captain helped us find food by showing us where to find dried goods and preserved meat in the abandoned houses.
He also led us to find other survivors who were willing to help us.
With his help, we were finally able to settle down safely in a house that was not too far from the imperial palace.
However, even though we were safe, I could not help but feel a deep sense of loss.
The world that I once knew had changed so much beyond my recognition, and I was having a hard time adapting to this new reality.
On the other hand, Lin Huang surprised me with her strength and determination.
Despite being weakened by her pregnancy and almost losing her life, she stood up again after receiving treatment from the other survivors.
She showed courage that I had never seen before as she faced danger head-on without flinching.

I lead Lin Huang through the abandoned market street, our footsteps echoing off the broken tiles.
The undead captain walks ahead of us, scanning the doorways and alleyways for any signs of danger.
We stop in front of a collapsed noodle shop, its windows barricaded with wooden planks.
A faint candlelight flickers through a crack in the planks, casting a dim glow on the street.
I knock three times, then twice, following the signal we agreed upon earlier.
There is a shuffling sound from inside, followed by muffled whispers.
The door creaks open, revealing two women and a child huddled together.
Their faces are gaunt and their eyes sunken, but there is a glimmer of relief in their expressions as they see other survivors.
The undead captain remains in the shadows, allowing me to step forward and make introductions.
"We are here to help you," I say softly.

"We have found a safe place for you to stay."
The women exchange glances, their eyes filled with uncertainty.
Inside the noodle shop, Lin Huang moves with a grace that belies the fear that once gripped her.
She glides between the huddled survivors, distributing dried meat and preserved fruits from our supplies.
The women's eyes widen as she drapes palace-made quilts over their shoulders, the imperial patterns a testament to the world they once knew.
The child, initially hiding behind his mother's skirts, inches closer to Lin Huang as she offers him a sweet cake.
I stand near the door, observing the tension in the survivors' shoulders slowly dissipate as they begin to trust us.

One of the women, her voice barely above a whisper, asks, "How can we trust that this place is truly safe?"
Lin Huang kneels beside her, meeting her gaze with unwavering determination.
"Because I refuse to let fear dictate our lives any longer," she replies, her voice steady and resolute.
While keeping watch at the noodle shop entrance, I notice a slight movement in the dark corner near the storage jars.
My hand instinctively tightens on the weapon I carry, anticipating another undead attack.
The survivors huddle closer to Lin Huang, their eyes wide with fear.
Lin Huang, despite her swollen belly, stands tall and unwavering.
I approach the corner cautiously, my senses heightened.
As I draw nearer, a sleek black shape emerges from the shadows.
It is not an undead but a cat, its fur glistening in the candlelight.
Its eyes seem unusually bright, almost glowing in the dimness.
Before I can shoo it away, the cat opens its mouth and speaks in clear human language.
"Who are you?"

The survivors gasp and scramble backward, their faces filled with shock and disbelief.
Lin Huang grabs my arm, her fingers digging into my skin as she stares at the talking cat.
"What kind of sorcery is this?" Lin Huang whispers, her voice trembling slightly.
The cat flicks its tail, seemingly amused. "Not sorcery, but a gift from the old world," it replies, its voice smooth and knowing.
I glance at Lin Huang, my mind racing. "What do you mean by 'gift'?"
