My crush and I were trapped in a closet during a school lockdown. The lockdown lasted four hours. We had to wait there for the whole duration.
The loud boom makes me jump, and my hand flies to my mouth in shock.
"What was that?"
I whisper to Jason.
We’re hiding in the supply closet, waiting for the lockdown to end.
He shrugs.
"Probably just a car backfiring."
But I know better.
I heard the principal’s voice over the intercom before we hid in here.
She sounded scared, and she told everyone to hide and not make a sound.
Whatever it was, it definitely wasn’t a car.
Jason and I exchange worried glances.
Four hours ago, we were in English class when the code red was announced over the intercom.
At first, I thought it was just another drill, but then I heard the terror in our principal’s voice as she made the announcement.
I shift slightly, trying to get comfortable on the hard floor, my legs numb from sitting cross-legged for what feels like an eternity.
Jason leans against the shelves, his eyes scanning the dimly lit closet as if searching for an escape route.
"We should listen for updates," I suggest, my voice barely above a whisper, not wanting to disturb the heavy silence that's settled around us.
Jason nods, his expression serious, his brow furrowed in concern.
We both strain our ears, hoping to catch any sound from the intercom above us, the only connection to the outside world.
The silence is oppressive, broken only by our breathing and the occasional creak of the building settling, like an old wooden ship adjusting its weight.
Minutes tick by slowly, each one feeling like an hour, as we wait for some news, any news, about what's happening outside these confining walls.
Suddenly, a faint crackle comes from the intercom speaker above us, and we freeze, exchanging tense glances as we wait for any news or instructions.
My heart skips a beat as I lean forward, my ears perked up like a rabbit sensing danger.
Jason's eyes lock onto mine, his pupils dilated with anticipation.
The crackle grows louder, and I can make out the principal's voice, her words muffled but urgent.
"We...need...to...evacuate..." she says, her voice cutting in and out.
I feel a surge of adrenaline as Jason grabs my hand, his grip tight.
"What's going on?" I mouth to him, but he just shakes his head, his eyes fixed on the intercom.
The principal's voice grows louder, more insistent.
"Now...please...make...your...way..."
Suddenly, the lights in the closet flicker and die, plunging us into darkness.
I gasp, my heart racing as Jason's grip on my hand tightens.
