I woke to the sound of my phone going off and I reached over to turn it off.
As I lay there, I could hear the light rain falling outside.
Rolling over, I looked at the clock and saw that it was only six thirty, so I closed my eyes and rolled back over to go back to sleep.
The sound of the phone going off again had me rolling over and picking it up off the nightstand.
"Hello," I said.
"Hey, babe, happy birthday."
It was my girlfriend, Sarah.
"Thanks, honey, I didn't think you would be able to call until later."
"I snuck out of the meeting to wish you a happy birthday."
I could hear her smiling on the other end of the phone.
"I'm going to be late getting home, but how about we meet at the diner for lunch?"
"That sounds good to me."
I could hear her smile in her voice as she said, "I love you."
"I love you too."
We both hung up the phone and I threw it onto the bed beside me.
I rolled over and closed my eyes, trying to go back to sleep, but knowing that it was pointless.
It had been a year since we had started dating and every time we were apart for more than a few hours I felt like I was missing a part of myself.
