I was going to change the world.
At least, that’s what I kept telling myself.
As a seventeen-year-old high school senior, I’d never built a robot that worked or written a line of code that did anything more complicated than asked the user for their name and printed it back out.
But I’d spend all summer working on my project—building an AI that could learn and adapt like a human being—and I was sure I’d get it working.
I had to.
The fate of humanity depended on it.
Okay, so maybe that was an exaggeration too.
At least, it would depend on someone doing it, and why not me?
I mean, sure, I wasn’t the best student in my computer science class or anything.
I wasn’t even the best in my school (that was Emily Sweeney).
But I was pretty good at figuring things out once I had them in my hands.
That was why I’d spent most of the money I’d earned mowing lawns over the past few years buying up old computers and junk at garage sales.
I had a whole pile of them stacked up in my garage workshop, just waiting to be hacked together into something new and amazing.
"Hey there, Behzad."
I turned away from the stack of computers and looked over my shoulder.
My mom stood in the doorway between my house and my garage, a hand on either hip.
