Traveling through time was nothing like I expected it to be.
I had no control over when or where I went.
I had no control over whose body I would be in.
It could be a male or female, young or old.
I had no idea what year it would be or what my name was.
I was at the mercy of the mail.
Every time I got a letter, I traveled to a new body in a new time.
I learned early on that I should never send myself letters back to back tracks I had already been on.
The first time I did it, I ended up in a body that was standing in a river in Alaska in 1955.
The second time I did it, I was in a body that was in the middle of the desert in Egypt in 2087.
Both times I died quickly when my two selves touched.
I never sent a letter to myself after that.
I was careful not to do it again.
I learned to adapt to each new body I inhabited and to make the best of the situation I found myself in.
Time Traveler's Dilemma
I opened the letter and read the words on the page.
As I did, I felt the familiar tug as my consciousness was pulled out of my body and sent to another.
When I came to, I was in a small body sitting cross-legged on a wooden floor.
Tiny hands rested in my lap.
A child's voice echoed in my mind.
I blinked several times, trying to get used to the new perspective.
Everything seemed so big around me.
I looked around and saw that I was in a room filled with toys.
Colorful blocks were stacked up in one corner, and stuffed animals lined a shelf against one wall.
A window let in a stream of sunlight that illuminated the dust particles floating in the air.
I heard a woman calling from another room, "Timothy, it's time for your nap."
I assumed she was my mother in this life.
Time Traveler's Dilemma
Her voice sounded warm and inviting.
Time Traveler's Dilemma
I looked around the room, taking in the vibrant array of toys scattered across the floor.
There were toy cars and dolls, as well as a few books stacked haphazardly in one corner.
The woman's voice called again, more insistently this time.
My tiny legs moved instinctively towards the sound, but something strange happened.
My vision blurred, and suddenly I was no longer looking through the eyes of a child.
Instead, I found myself staring at the world from a much lower vantage point—a toy's perspective.
The wooden floor loomed like a vast plain stretching out before me.
The woman entered the room, her eyes widening as she scanned the space for me.
Time Traveler's Dilemma
I blinked, trying to adjust to this new perspective.
The room seemed to shift and tilt around me, as if I were seeing it through a distorted lens.
I heard a soft rustling sound, like the gentle movement of fabric.
A small, plush bear with button eyes shuffled closer, its movements deliberate and slow.
It stopped in front of me and looked up at the woman, who was still searching for me.
"I can help you return to your body," it whispered, its voice barely audible over the creaking of the wooden floorboards.
I stared at the bear in confusion, unsure of what to make of its words.
It was an ordinary-looking toy, with worn fur and a stitched smile on its face.
But there was something peculiar about it, something that made me feel like it was more than just a simple toy.
The bear glanced towards the door where the woman stood, still searching for me.
"Follow my lead," it said, its voice low and urgent.
I hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to move in this form.
Time Traveler's Dilemma
"Trust me," the bear insisted, its button eyes fixed on mine.
"Why should I trust a talking toy?" I asked, skepticism lacing my voice.
"Because I'm the only one who knows how to break the cycle," it replied, its tone filled with a quiet determination.
