Marty Thompson
hopeful, and introspective. Marty harbors a secret crush on Arthur Amir, his fellow soldier and friend. Despite his nervousness, he decides to confess his feelings to Arthur during a lunch break. His relationship with Arthur is complex, as he struggles to balance friendship with romantic feelings. Marty's interactions with Arthur's sister Elanor reveal his awkwardness around her.
Arthur Amir
dedicated, and oblivious. Arthur is Marty's close friend and the object of Marty's secret affection. His dedication to duty keeps him occupied most of the time, leaving little opportunity for personal interactions. Despite this, he shares a strong bond with Marty and values their friendship deeply. His sister Elanor often teases him about his lack of romantic interest.
Elanor Amir
mischievous, and affectionate towards her brother.
I am Marty.
I am with my soldiers in Hollovana Mall which has been turned into a temporary military base.
We are here to fight zombies that are outside the mall here.
My friends are Lettie Aoi, Quincy, and Arthur Amir.
I have a secret.
I have a crush on Arthur.
But I can't confess to him because he is busy all the time.
He even eats at the canteen here, not outside so we can even talk a little.
So I decided to ask him to meet me during his lunch break today.
"Hey, Arthur. Can we meet during your lunch break today?"
I texted him.
Hopefully, he is not on a mission today.
He replied soon enough, "What for?"
"Can't I just want to talk to you?"
I asked, trying to sound innocent.
"Fine. But just for a minute."
"Okay," I said and waited for his lunch break.
Finally, after a long wait, he arrived at the lobby where I had asked him to meet me.
"Hi."
"Hi, Marty. What did you want to talk about?"
"Um... how have you been?"
I asked, wanting to stall for a little while longer.
"I'm fine. Now tell me what you wanted to talk about."
"Um... actually..."
I said, taking a deep breath and looking down.
"I have a crush on you."
He looked at me shocked.
"I didn't know that."
I looked at his face.
He shifted his weight from one foot to the other and looked at his watch before looking back at me.
The fluorescent lights of the mall cast harsh shadows on his face.
He rubbed the back of his neck, a habit he had when he was nervous.
People walked past us, their boots echoing on the tile floor.
He took a deep breath, and his expression softened into a gentle smile.
"I need some time to think about this," he said quietly, adjusting the rifle strap on his shoulder.
I watched as he shifted his weight again, the fluorescent lights of the mall casting harsh shadows on his face.
His eyes were still processing what I had told him.
Other soldiers walked past us, their boots echoing on the tile floor.
He rubbed the back of his neck again and took a deep breath.
I felt my heart pounding in my chest when I felt his fingers brush against my hand.
It was so brief that I almost wondered if I had imagined it.
He leaned in closer, his breath warm against my ear.
The familiar scent of his standard-issue soap filled my nose as he whispered, "Can we talk about this later?"
"Yeah, of course," I replied, trying to hide my disappointment.
He nodded, stepping back slightly, his eyes scanning the crowd.
"Let's focus on getting through today first," he added, his voice firm but kind.
"Okay," I said, feeling a little better.
He gave me a reassuring smile before turning to leave.
I watched him go, his broad shoulders and confident stride making him stand out from the crowd.
I turned and walked away, feeling a mix of emotions swirling inside me.
I couldn't wait to talk to him again.
I went to the abandoned GameStop we had converted into our sleeping quarters.
Lettie looked at me worriedly as I passed by her.
I ignored her and went to my makeshift desk, which was an old checkout counter.
The glass display cases were empty except for a few dust particles that had accumulated over time.
The emergency lights cast an eerie glow on the walls as I sat down in my chair.
My desk was cluttered with military reports and my laptop.
I opened my laptop and stared at it for a while before I started typing out a message to Arthur. I drafted and deleted multiple messages before I finally typed out a simple one.
"Arthur, do you think there is an us?"
My finger hovered over the send button for a while before I finally sent it.
I looked at the clock on the wall, which was 2300 hours.
I stared at the message for a while, my fingers hovering over the keyboard.
I could hear the night patrol passing by outside the store, their boots echoing on the tile floor.
The digital clock on my laptop blinked 2307.
I knew I should get some sleep, but my mind was racing with possibilities.
Instead of going to sleep, I organized the mission reports on my desk, occasionally glancing at my phone.
The emergency lights cast long shadows across the empty store shelves.
Quincy stopped by to relieve me for the night shift, but I barely acknowledged him as I gathered my things and headed to my sleeping quarters.
