Jin Xiaofang

and sociable. In middle school, she unknowingly inspired a profound impact on He Min by her mere presence. Their relationship remained platonic as she never sensed his feelings. After high school, she moved to Beijing for work, changing the course of their relationship. Decades later, she married and was living a fulfilling life, sending He Min a wedding invitation.

I was mute the moment I met her.
Not that I was born mute, but I became mute because of her.
I was so nervous that I couldn't speak when I was in front of her.
It was in middle school, and we were classmates.
I saw her smile and was immediately smitten.
From then on, I would look for excuses to get close to her, to look at her, and sometimes even just to listen to her voice.
However, I never mustered the courage to tell her how I felt about her.
I let the opportunity slip away.
I didn't even write a single love letter to her.
If I had been more courageous back then, maybe my life would have been different now.
Maybe she wouldn't have married someone else and would still be with me.
The Youthful Years Are Over
I walk through the familiar streets leading to our old middle school.
My feet move on autopilot, and my mind is a mess of thoughts.
The wedding invitation is in my jacket pocket, and I can't stop thinking about it.
The school gates are different now; they're painted a fresh blue instead of the faded green I remember.
Through the iron bars, I see our old classroom window on the second floor.
She used to sit by the window, third row from the front.
A group of students rushes past me, their laughter echoing in the yard just like ours did decades ago.
"Hey, you made it," a voice calls out, and I turn to see her standing there, just as radiant as ever.
"Yeah, I thought I'd take a walk down memory lane before the big day," I reply, trying to keep my voice steady.
"You know, I always wondered why you never said anything back then," she says softly, her eyes searching mine.
The Youthful Years Are Over
I watch her expression change as I explain.
"I was a teenager, and you were the prettiest girl in class. Every time I tried to talk to you, my tongue would get tied in knots."
The afternoon sun casts long shadows across the schoolyard, and I grip the invitation tighter in my pocket.
Before I can finish, a familiar figure appears across the street.
Zhang Wei, our old class monitor, waves enthusiastically and crosses over.
His confident stride hasn't changed since middle school.
He reaches us, grinning broadly, his business suit a stark contrast to our old classroom's backdrop.
"Zhang Wei, it's been ages!" she exclaims, her smile widening as she turns to him.
"Indeed it has," Zhang Wei replies, glancing between us. "You know, I always thought you two would end up together."
I feel a pang of regret as I meet her eyes, and she looks away, a wistful smile playing on her lips.
