His love for his family is evident as he remains a source of strength and inspiration for David and his brothers.
I first met Genny Hart at the Houston Rodeo in 1980.
I was with my dad and my brothers, Kerry, Mike, Kevin, Chris, and Jack Jr.
We were all there to watch the bull riding, as it was something we all loved.
My brothers and I were also into horse riding and owned a few horses ourselves on our Dad’s ranch.
The Texas Tornadoes, as we were known, were the sons of Fritz Von Erich, a famous world champion wrestler.
We were all wrestlers trained by our father and the great Danny Hodge.
We would wrestle all over the world for various promotions, but mainly for the WWF now known as WWE.
As we were all watching the rodeo, I saw this beautiful girl sitting in front of me with her brother Owen and their parents, Stu and Helen Hart.
Owen was also a wrestler trained by his father Stu, who was a great wrestler himself.
Stu was also the promoter of Stampede Wrestling out of Calgary, Canada.
I shift uncomfortably in my seat as Dad’s elbow connects with my ribs.
He leans close, whispering in my ear, "You know, I know Stu Hart from our wrestling days."
My brothers all look at each other, Kerry smirking and Mike pretending to watch the rodeo.
I try to look casual, but my eyes keep drifting back to the long dark hair of the girl in front of me.
She’s wearing a blue denim jacket with "Hart" embroidered on the back.
The announcer's voice booms through the speakers, making her jump slightly.
Owen turns around and whispers something to her, then looks over his shoulder at me.
I shift uncomfortably in my seat, pretending to watch the bull rider in the arena.
The girl is completely focused on the event, occasionally leaning close to Owen when the crowd gets loud.
Kerry elbows me again, and I almost jump out of my skin.

"Hi there," I say, my voice cracking slightly.
"I'm David Von Erich."
She startles and looks back at me with wide eyes.
Owen gives me an appraising look while Dad and Stu exchange knowing glances.
Her lips part as if to speak, but no words come out.
Finally, she finds her voice, "I'm Genny Hart."
Owen nudges her with a grin, "He's one of the Texas Tornadoes, Gen."
She nods slowly, a small smile forming, "I've heard about you guys... My dad says you're quite the legends."
During a break in the bull riding, I lean forward again, my heart hammering against my chest.
Genny adjusts her jacket, and a hint of her perfume drifts back to me.
Owen catches my movement and gives me a nod of encouragement.
I clear my throat and tap Genny's shoulder gently.
She turns, her dark hair swinging, those eyes meeting mine again.
"Would you and your family like to join us for drinks at the rodeo bar after?"
I manage to ask.
Kerry kicks my boot supportively under the seat.
Genny glances at Owen, then her parents, before looking back at me.

I lead our families through the crowded rodeo grounds, weaving past people in cowboy hats and boots.
We reach the wooden-beamed bar, the smell of beer and sweat filling the air.
