I still remember the day the scouts from Europe came to watch me play.
I was 16 years old and a school dropout from Auckland, New Zealand.
My life was pretty simple back then: I woke up, played soccer with my friends, went to the pub with my best mate Daniel to watch the English Premier League, and if I wasn’t feeling too lazy, I would go to the gym.
That was my life until the day everything changed.
The scouts from Europe came to watch me play for my local club, Henderson Hartley.
They must have liked what they saw because they offered me a contract to join their academy in Germany—the academy of none other than Bayern Munich, one of the biggest clubs in the world.
It all happened so fast.
One minute I was arguing with the referee over a yellow card he had just given me for a tackle I made on their defender; the next, I was receiving a call from one of the scouts, inviting me to join Bayern Munich’s academy.
I remember hanging up the phone and looking over at Daniel, who was sitting next to me on the bus heading back home after the game.
I turned to him with a grin on my face and said, "Did you just hear that? The scouts from Europe want me to join their academy."
Daniel looked back at me and said, "Mate, you’re joking right? You’re not actually going to leave New Zealand for some soccer dream you have."
I shook my head.

"I’m not joking, Dan. They want me to join their academy."
I leaned back against the worn bus seat and watched as Daniel’s face changed from one of disbelief to concern.
The afternoon sun was streaming through the grimy window on the other side of the bus, casting a shadow across the empty seats in front of us.
Daniel turned to me and said, "But you can’t go. You’re 16 years old, mate. You don’t even know anyone in Europe. How are you going to survive over there? It’s a long way from home."
He started listing all the reasons why I shouldn’t go.
The distance between New Zealand and Germany, how I didn’t speak any German, and how I had just dropped out of school.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and showed him the message I had received from the scout.
My hands were shaking as I handed him my phone.
The bus hit a pothole, making us bounce up and down in our seats.
I looked over at Daniel and said, "You don’t understand, Dan. This is an opportunity of a lifetime for me. I’ve always dreamed about playing professional soccer."

Daniel looked at me with a frown on his face and said, "But what about your mom? She’s always wanted you to finish school."
I sighed and said, "I know, but this is different. This is something that I’ve always wanted to do." The bus screeched to a halt at our regular corner, and we both stood up to get off.
I extended my hand to help Daniel up from his seat, and he took it gratefully.
As we made our way down the aisle towards the front of the bus, I told Daniel about how my mom was born in Germany before moving to New Zealand when she was a teenager.
She always talked about how much she loved Bavaria, where she was born.

Daniel’s expression softened when I told him that the academy had an education program for young players who hadn’t finished school yet.
After getting off the bus, we walked home through the quiet streets of Henderson.
The sun was starting to set, casting a warm orange glow over everything.
As we walked, I practiced what I was going to say to my mom when I told her about Bayern Munich.
I wanted to make sure that I said everything just right.
The streetlights flickered on as dusk settled over the city.
I checked my phone and saw that I had three missed calls from Tino, the scout who had been in touch with me earlier.
My hands were shaking as I unlocked the front door of our house and made my way inside.
The smell of lasagna wafted from the kitchen, making my stomach growl with hunger.
My mom was standing at the stove, stirring a pot of marinara sauce.
She looked up when she heard me come in and smiled.

"Hey there, sweetie. How was your game?"
I dropped my bag onto the floor and walked over to give her a hug.
"It was good," I said, trying to sound casual despite my racing heart.
"We won 3-1."
She pulled away and looked at me with a curious expression.
"You look like you have something important to tell me," she said. I nodded and took a deep breath before launching into the story about how the scouts had come to watch us play and how they wanted me to join their academy in Germany.
I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I spoke, but I tried to keep my voice steady.
My mom listened intently, her eyes widening as she realized what I was saying.
When I finished talking, she put down the spoon she had been using to stir the sauce and turned to face me fully.
"Bayern Munich?" she asked, her voice full of surprise.
"Yes," I replied, feeling a surge of excitement mixed with nerves.
"They want me to join their academy. They said that they think I have potential and that they can help me develop my skills."
She stared at me for a moment, then nodded slowly.
"That’s amazing," she said.
"I’m so proud of you."

I felt a wave of relief wash over me at her words. "Thank you," I said, feeling tears prick at the corners of my eyes.
"This is an opportunity of a lifetime for me. I can’t believe that it’s really happening."
She smiled again and pulled me into another hug.
"I know how much this means to you," she said softly.
