I was a young witch with big dreams.
I wanted to be a wizard.
Now, I know what you're thinking.
Wizards are men, and witches are women.
That's just the way it is.
But I've never been one to follow the crowd or do things just because that's how they've always been done.
I'm hopeful.
I'm determined.
And I'm a little bit quirky.
So, when my parents told me that I couldn't be a wizard, I didn't let it stop me.
I had a plan, and that plan included finding a certain magical artifact and using it to make my dreams come true.
My friend Ethan was on board with my plan from the very start.
He's also an aspiring wizard, and together we made a killer team.
My other friend Percival wasn't so happy about it.
He's my dad, and he thinks I should focus on more "practical" things… like medicine or law.
He used to be a powerful wizard, but he lost his magical abilities when he was young, along with his father, who was also a wizard.
He doesn't really understand magic anymore, and he certainly doesn't think it's a "practical" way to make a living.
Needless to say, he wasn't happy when Delilah told him about my plans to become a wizard.
The Wizard Next Door
I wait until midnight when I know my parents are asleep, then I slide open my bedroom window as quietly as possible.
The cool night air rushes in, carrying the sweet scent of blooming flowers from our garden below.
I grab my pre-packed bag from under the bed, a small backpack containing everything I'll need for my journey: a map, compass, and some basic magical supplies.
Ethan is waiting for me at the base of the oak tree outside my window, its branches stretching up toward my room like skeletal fingers.
He's wearing his usual black jeans and t-shirt, his messy brown hair sticking out in all directions.
I whisper a quick levitation spell and float down to the grass, landing softly beside him.
My nerves are jangling with excitement and nerves, causing the magic to sputter a little on the way down.
I drop the last few feet with a soft thud.
Ethan stifles a laugh and reaches out to help me up. "Ready?" he whispers, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
"Always," I reply, adjusting the straps of my backpack over my shoulders.
The Wizard Next Door
We creep across the lawn, careful to avoid detection by our sleeping parents.
But as we approach the edge of our property line, I hear a familiar chirping noise coming from our front garden.
The sound makes me freeze in place.
"What is it?" Ethan whispers urgently.
"It's the gnomes," I hiss back.
The Wizard Next Door
My dad had cast a spell on them to act as security alarms in case anyone ever tried to break into our house.
They were enchanted to wake up if anyone came too close after dark, and they were not easy to silence once they got going. I hold my breath as we tiptoe between the rows of garden gnomes, their beady eyes seeming to follow our every move.
I freeze mid-step as the gnomes slowly turn their ceramic heads in our direction.
Their eyes begin to glow with a soft blue detection magic.
Ethan fumbles in his pocket for the silencing charm we had prepared for this exact scenario.
But before he can pull it out, the gnomes open their mouths in unison and let out a shrill, high-pitched wail that sends chills down my spine.
It's the magical equivalent of a car alarm, designed to wake up anyone within earshot.
Including my parents.
We only have seconds before they burst out of the front door to see what's causing the commotion.
"Run!"
I shout to Ethan, already taking off towards the safety of the nearby woods.
But it's too late.
The Wizard Next Door
The gnomes' magical wail has already filled the night air, echoing off the trees and buildings surrounding our property. Just when all hope seems lost, a brown-and-white spotted owl swoops down from above, its wings making barely a sound as it flies between us and the garden gnomes.
The owl lands on a nearby branch, watching us with wise, ancient eyes.
"What do you want?" one of the gnomes shouts at us in a high-pitched voice, its mouth still open from its previous wail.
The owl tilts its head slightly and speaks in a hushed, raspy voice that sounds like it hasn't been used in centuries.
"You shouldn't have come here," it says, its words barely audible over the sound of crickets chirping in the background.
"Garden gnomes are not easily silenced."
I exchange quick glances with Ethan, both of us wondering who or what this mysterious owl is and why it's helping us.
But we don't have time to ask questions right now.
We need to get out of here before my parents come storming out of the house. "How do we silence them?" Ethan asks the owl urgently.
The owl blinks once and then responds, "Garden gnomes are susceptible to confusion spells. But they must be cast simultaneously from different directions."
