I am the star quarterback of my high school football team.
I am dating the hottest girl in school.
I am 18 years old and I have everything I could possibly want.
I am living my best life and nothing can bring me down.
Well, at least that's what I thought until today.
"Touchdown!"
The crowd roars as I walk off the field, grinning from ear to ear.
We just won the big game and I scored the winning touchdown.
I can't wipe the smile from my face as I make my way through the throng of people.
I'm looking forward to seeing Emily's face when she finds out I won the game for our team.
She's going to be so happy and I can't wait to see her smile.
Just as that thought crosses my mind, I see her walking towards me, a huge smile on her beautiful face.
"Alex," she says, throwing herself into my arms.
"I'm so proud of you!"
I wrap my arms around her and kiss her lips softly.
"I couldn't have done it without you," I say, winking at her.
"You're the best girlfriend ever."
Emily giggles and smacks me on the arm before pulling away from me.
"You're the best boyfriend ever too," she says, blushing slightly.
Just then, a girl with long black hair approaches me and clears her throat to get my attention.
She's standing there awkwardly, fidgeting with the sleeve of her oversized black sweater.
"Uh, hi," she says, looking at me with a strange expression on her face.
"I'm Raven. I was wondering if you could help me with something."
I look at Emily and then back at Raven.
"What do you need help with?"
I ask her.
She looks down at the ground and mumbles something under her breath before looking back up at me.
"I need you to coach my little brother," she says, her voice barely above a whisper.
"He wants to be a football player when he grows up and I was hoping you could teach him some things."
I sigh and rub my temples.
"I'm sorry, but I don't have time for that," I say, shaking my head.
The Witch And The Quarterback
"I'm too busy with school and football to take on another responsibility."
Raven's eyes narrow into slits and she glares at me.
"Fine," she says, her voice dripping with venom.
"But you're going to regret this."
And with that, she turns and walks away.
Emily looks at me curiously.
"Who was that girl?" she asks, tilting her head to the side.
"I have no idea," I reply, shrugging my shoulders.
"But I don't think she likes me very much."
Suddenly, I hear a faint whispering in my ear and I turn around to see who it is.
But there's no one there.
The whispering gets louder and louder until I can make out what the person is saying. "You should have helped me," the voice says.
"Now you're going to pay the price."
I spin around again, trying to find the source of the voice, but there's still no one there.
And then, out of the corner of my eye, I see Raven standing off to the side, chanting something under her breath.
Her eyes are closed and her hands are clasped together in front of her chest as if she's praying.
But it doesn't look like any prayer I've ever seen before.
It looks more like a spell or a curse or something like that.
And then it hits me - this girl must be a witch!
I can't believe it!
I've never met a real-life witch before!
As Raven continues to chant, Emily and I suddenly freeze in place, unable to move or speak.
We watch as Raven's eyes snap open and she glares at us with an evil grin spreading across her face. "You should have helped me," she says again, her voice dripping with malice.
Emily's eyes widen in panic, and she manages to whisper, "Alex, what's happening to us?"
Raven opens her eyes, a smirk playing on her lips. "I told you you'd regret it," she says calmly.
The Witch And The Quarterback
"Please, just stop this," I plead, feeling the weight of my own helplessness.
And then, just as quickly as she appeared, Raven vanishes.
Emily and I look at each other, confused and a little shaken.
But we both laugh it off as some weird drama club stunt.
We head to the after-game party at Tommy's house, where I keep flexing my arms and showing off my muscles to prove that nothing happened.
Everyone is celebrating our win, and I'm happy to join in.
But as the night goes on, I start to feel a little strange.
My arms are feeling heavy and tingly, like they're filled with lead.
I brush it off as fatigue from the game, but deep down, I know something is wrong.
Around midnight, Emily kisses me goodnight and I drive home alone.
As soon as I get behind the wheel, my whole body starts to ache like I just ran a marathon.

I try to shake it off, but it only gets worse. When I get home, I pop some painkillers and head straight for bed.
As I brush my teeth, I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and examine my biceps one last time.
They still look solid as ever, but I can't shake the feeling that something is off.
I wake up the next morning feeling strange.
My body feels lighter than usual, and I can't seem to shake off the tingling sensation in my arms.
I stumble out of bed and stagger to the bathroom, gripping the sink for support.
As I look at myself in the mirror, I can't believe what I see.
My once muscular arms have shrunk down to almost nothing!
My skin is pale and clammy, and my eyes look sunken and dark.
I'm shaking like a leaf, and my heart is racing a mile a minute.
I try to lift my arms up, but they feel like lead weights.
I can barely hold them up for a second before they drop back down to my sides.
I stumble backwards and fall onto the edge of the bathtub, gasping for breath. I try to stand up again, but my legs feel like jelly.
The Witch And The Quarterback
I can't even support my own weight!
I look down at my body and see that it's not just my arms that have changed.
My entire body has shrunk!
My muscles are gone, replaced by soft, flabby skin.
My bones feel brittle and weak, like they could snap in half if I make one wrong move.
I'm horrified!
What the hell happened to me?
I try to do a push-up, but I can only manage one before collapsing back down onto the floor.
I'm so weak that I can barely lift myself up off the ground!
Panic sets in as I realize that I have no idea what's happening to me or how to fix it. I quickly strip down to my underwear and examine myself more closely.
That's when I notice something else - there's something missing!
I look down at my crotch and gasp in horror when I see that my manhood has shrunk down to almost nothing!
It's like a little worm now!
Oh God, this is awful!
How am I going to face Emily like this?
What am I going to tell her?
She's going to be so disgusted with me!
She'll probably break up with me on the spot!
No, no, no!
This can't be happening!
Not now!
Not when everything was going so well for me!
Why did this have to happen?
And why did it have to happen now?
I try doing some more push-ups, but it's no use.
The Witch And The Quarterback
I'm too weak even to lift myself off the ground. Finally, after what feels like an eternity, I manage to crawl into my room and collapse onto my bed.
I force myself out of bed and drive to Raven's house.
I got her address from the school directory, and I'm not going to leave until I get some answers.
My hands are shaking on the steering wheel as I park across the street from her house.
I can see her through the living room window, playing guitar.
I march up to the front door and start pounding on it.
Raven opens it, smirking when she sees me.
"Well, well, well," she says, looking me up and down.
"Look what we have here."
"You did this to me!"
I shout at her.
The Witch And The Quarterback
"You have to fix it!"
She raises an eyebrow at me.
"Fix what?"
"My arms! My body! Everything!"
She shrugs.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Don't play dumb with me!"
I growl at her.
"I know you're a witch. You cast a spell on me."
She rolls her eyes.
"Oh please. You think I'm a witch just because I like to play around with magic?"
"No, I know you're a witch because you turned me into this!"
I gesture to my body. "Well, if you're so sure that I'm a witch, then why don't you come inside and let me explain everything to you?"
She steps aside and motions for me to enter.
I hesitate for a moment, but then I follow her into the living room.
She sits down on the couch and motions for me to join her.
"So, what do you want to know?"
"Everything," I say, sitting down next to her.
"How did you do this? And how do I reverse it?"
She sighs and runs a hand through her hair.
"It's not that simple," she says.
"There's no way to reverse it. Once a spell is cast, it can't be undone."
"What do you mean?"
I ask, feeling my heart sink in my chest.
"I mean that once a spell is cast, there's no way to break it. It's permanent."
"But...but...this can't be happening," I stammer.
"This is crazy."
She shrugs again.
"I told you that you would regret not helping me."
"But this is ridiculous," I say, standing up and pacing back and forth across the room.
The Witch And The Quarterback
"There has to be a way to fix this. There just has to be."
"Ridiculous or not, you brought this on yourself," Raven replies, her voice calm but firm.
"There must be something I can do," I insist, desperation creeping into my voice.
Raven looks at me thoughtfully before saying, "Well, there might be one way, but it won't be easy."
I stop pacing and turn to face her.
"What is it?"
I ask, my voice shaking with hope.
She smirks at me before saying, "There are two ways to break the curse. You have two choices."
"Two choices?"
I repeat, my heart racing.
"Yes," she says, leaning back in her chair and crossing her arms over her chest.
"You can either train harder than you ever have before and somehow regain all of your strength before the championship game in three months. Or, you can coach my brother Noah to become good enough to lead the team to victory."
I stare at her, shocked by what she's just said.
"Are you kidding me?"
The Witch And The Quarterback
I ask, my voice shaking with anger.
"Those aren't options! There's no way I can regain all of my strength in three months. And there's no way I can coach Noah to become good enough to lead the team to victory."
Raven shrugs again.
"Like I said, it won't be easy."
"But...but...this is ridiculous," I say, feeling tears prick at the corners of my eyes.
"I can't do either of those things."
Raven stands up and walks over to the guitar that she had been playing earlier.
She picks it up and begins strumming a soft melody.
"What are you doing?"
I ask her, feeling confused and frustrated.
"I'm playing a song," she replies, not looking at me.
"But...but...what about what you just said? What about breaking the curse?"
Raven continues playing her guitar without answering me. I stand there for a few moments, watching her play and trying to figure out what to do next.
But as I watch her, I realize that she's not going to help me anymore.
She's made it clear that she doesn't care about me or my problems.
And so, with a heavy heart, I turn and walk towards the front door.
As I reach for the handle, Raven finally speaks up again.
"Oh, and one more thing," she says, still playing her guitar.
"If you don't break the curse within three months, you'll never be able to play football again."
I stop in my tracks and turn back to look at her.
The Witch And The Quarterback
"What?"
I ask, feeling like I've been punched in the gut.
"If you don't break the curse within three months, then it will become permanent," she repeats, looking up at me with a cold expression on her face.
"I said, if you don't break the curse within three months, you'll never be able to play football again," she repeats.
I stare at her, trying to process what she's just said.
"But...but...that's not fair," I stammer.
"You can't do that."
Raven shrugs again.
"It's not up to me. It's just how the curse works."
I stand there for a few moments longer, trying to think of something to say.
But before I can come up with anything, Raven speaks up again.
"Now, if you'll excuse me, I have better things to do than stand here talking all day."
She continues playing her guitar, ignoring me completely.
The Witch And The Quarterback
I stand there for a few more seconds before finally turning and walking out the door.
As soon as I step outside, I hear my phone buzzing in my pocket.
I pull it out and see that Emily is calling me.
"Hey," I say, answering the call.
"Where are you?"
"I'm on my way home from practice," she replies.
"Can I come over?"
I hesitate for a moment before answering.
"Yeah, sure," I say finally.
"But...uh...I'm not feeling very well right now."
"Oh no," Emily says, sounding concerned.
"What's wrong?"
"I don't know," I reply, trying to think of an excuse.
"I just feel really weak and tired all of a sudden."
"Well, maybe you should go see a doctor," Emily suggests. "Yeah, maybe you're right," I agree, feeling relieved that she believes me.
"I'll call one now and make an appointment."
"Okay," Emily says.
"But in the meantime, why don't you go take a nap or something? You sound like you could use it."
"Yeah, okay," I say, feeling grateful for her understanding.
"I love you," she says before hanging up the phone.
"I love you too," I reply, even though she can't hear me anymore.
As soon as we hang up, I hear Emily's car pull into my driveway outside my house.
My heart starts racing as I realize that she's coming over anyway!
What am I going to do?
How am I going to explain this to her?
The Witch And The Quarterback
I quickly scramble out of bed and run into the bathroom to hide in the shower stall. A few minutes later, I hear Emily coming up the stairs towards my bedroom - our usual post-game hookup spot - and then entering my room!
"Hey, are you in here?" Emily calls out, her voice tinged with concern.
I take a deep breath, trying to steady myself before responding. "Yeah, I'm just in the shower," I say, hoping she can't hear the tremor in my voice.
"Okay," she replies, sounding relieved. "I brought some soup and your favorite energy drink. Thought it might help."
